Deer season starts in a month. I have an AR chambered in 5.56 and a 12 gauge. The easy solution would be to just get a higher caliber rifle but it's not in the budget rn so that's not the answer I'm looking for.
I know that 5.56/.223 is typically considered underkill for medium game, but it's the platform that I have the most time on by far and I'm really comfortable on it. I found a nice 77gr round that has good testimonials from other deer hunters online as well as penetration trials. I was raised hunting with 30-06 though, so even with all that I have to admit it feels weird using such a light round for this application.
I did just get a 12 gauge two weeks ago though, and had some luck duck hunting. Despite being new to shotgunning, I thought it would at least be worth considering taking it and slugs/buckshot for the higher killing capability.
What do you bros think? Go with the 5.56 that I'm confident with or take the time between now and the start of the season to try to get gud with the shotgun?
