/out/ instruments.

Have any of you learned how to play something and take that something /out/ with you?

I'm near 30 years old and can't really play an instrument - but I want to learn.

Not that I give a shit about being good, the only ones listening to me are birds, and they seem to like it.
And as I travel a lot abroad, an instrument can open doors that would otherwise be closed.

I play didgeridoo. currently in the process of making a hiking stick/didgeridoo so it isn't completely dead weight. Also interested in learning harmonica, as my grandfather had a really quality german one which is mine now.

I have been thinking of making a small hand drum out of the bottom of a water jug. I suppose you could also use your pot, if you bring a cook-kit.

I suck at harmonica, but it's fun and passes the time. i inherited it a few years ago when my grandmother died.

it's about 100 years old and belonged to my great grandfather, who brought from europe to live in america. it went through both world wars (one in his pocket and two in his son's pocket) and eventually i got it.

it's been on a lot more campouts than i could ever go on...

Just so you know, most harmonicas wear out after about a year of playing. Harp players go through them quick -- especially if they do blues licks that have bends and stuff.

I bought a lightweight banjo (no resonator on back); often carry a harmonica; and I have a uke.

But, I can't really play any of them. I just need to dedicate myself.

Order of wanting to be able to play:

1- banjo
2- harmonica
3- ukulele

harmonica is fantastic for its portability. I have one with me sometimes, and in my car on long long road trips I'll sometimes pull it out and jam without really knowing what I am doing.

Not that poster, but I've been playing the banjo for a long time.

The one in the picture is a Deering Goodtime. It's lighter than the Goodtime II or Goodtime Special or any of the others. It's also a little cheaper, at about $300 US.

Other good, light banjos include the Gold Tone Cripple Creek, which is possibly a little cheaper, and some of the low-end Rovers. But the Rovers will eventually have part failure, due to being just that cheap. The fifth-string nut on mine cracked in half after about a year, but I got it replaced with bone for cheap.

If you're really interested in the banjo, go to banjohangout.org. Lots of good advice on what banjo to get, how to play, etc.

I've taught myself pennywhistle while outdoors where nobody can hear; I still can't ad-lib tunes, but I can rattle off a decent-sounding Irish jig. There are a lot of helpful youtube videos.
I would advise against getting a Clark whistle because for some reason after a while it clogs up with moisture when you play it outdoors. Get one with a plastic mouthpiece.

Im a good singer so I taught myself enough guitar to strum/finger pick competently in 2 keys, wouldn't say I "play" guitar but I can accompany myself well enough. I like to bring a guitar on short overnights, my companions seems to enjoy it as well as I.

I'm currently learning banjo and having quite a bit of fun with it. I'm nearing 5 months so nothing special, and I play on a 40-yo open back that is literally falling apart the more I play, but I love it. Hopefully by the summer I'll be decent enough to bring it /out/ (although perhaps not for my friends :D)

It's -30C here and I'm packing up to go out for a week camping.

The winter is a wonderful silent time that can force inner reflection more so than a summer trip.

Maybe it depends on where you live...

As well as hallucinogenics, sleep deprivation, and fasting, I have found that great physical exertion can lead to fairly intense visions.
