What are some low profile tarp shelters? I feel exposed when sleeping in the open with just a wind breaker layout. It's just a mental thing but i feel much more snug and secure when it's hard to be seen.
What works for you?

You might want to add a mini tarp when on extende dtrips for comfort if its raining. Not necessary on overnighters or weekend trips desu.

i use picrel because it has sides. Keeps out rain better and more private. Lots of hammock flys are the same. It's big though you might want to look for something smaller.

i love this one, it's easy and fast to set-up. decent against the wind. only thing i have added recently is a velcro strap where the trekking pole meets the tarp from the outside (prevents the trekking pole from falling)

I've been curious about this for a while, how do you keep the bugs out? Where I am is full of nasty biters with diseases or poison that I absolutely do not want a repeat of. One poison snek bite and one brown recluse bite is enough for me, kthx.

Price is really good but it's not something I would recommend for anything else but A frame desu also the chinesium 5000mm claim is far from truth it's more like 2000mm like old school poncho so do expect wetouts under severe prolonged storms

Does anyone make good custom tarps? I want to get a custom tarp-poncho combo sized to my hammock with added ties to be worn as a pack-cover. I've seen this done several times by extreme-UL people but never seen where they get them.

Just use a hammock with bugnet in ground configuration. Works excellent whether on or off the ground.

I tried this setup on Saturday night. Middle of one side tied to a tree, opposite side staked into the ground. Kept me warm and dry. I fed the fire when I woke up every few hours.
It rained all night, and the rain turned to snow at about 10:30 the next morning. Water pooled in the back corners of the tarp. Were I to use this setup again, I would fold the back corners underneath the shelter to create a triangular shape.

what guylines/ropes do you guys use for tarps and how do you connect it to trekking poles and tree? op image only shows it connecting to ground with one guyline, how stable is this?
wanna get into tarp camping or sleeping under just a bugnet since there isnt that much wind where i live.

Regular 550 Paracord. You can also use braided 3mm nylon for something lighter and more waterresistant. I wouldnt go thinner than 3mm but some people use 2mm dynema for the guylines and 3mm for the ridgeline.

Use a bowline to anker to a tree or create guyline loops. Use the truckers hitch to pull lines taught. Pretty much all you need.
One 40' line for the ridgeline.
Two 30' lines as backup
Six 6' lines for the guylines.

I used to use a surplus cot and a couple ponchos hung between a couple trees. It was fine.
If the weather was nice I would just use the cot and throw a old shelter-half over the blankets I slept under to deal with the dew or occasional light shower.

not the anon, but anything that holds a decent knot and ideally has very little stretch. Overnight or with rain stretch results in sagging. Couple that with possibly a nylon tarp and that will also stretch.

I also highly recommend finding some way of tensioning the lines easily, like a lineloc. When the shelter goes up, it is much easier to correctly adjust it slightly afterwards. It also makes taking up any sag, like with a nylon tarp, much easier.

related question: how do i rough it in a hot weather sleeping bag without getting wacked by mosquitoes? is there a bag that has a netting material you can breathe through which goes over your damn head? i want to zip up completely without suffocating or being too goddamn hot.

I would get a wynnchester swagroll instead of a bivi bag when motorized. More breathable/durable. Less sweat.

not sure how expensive the snugpak is mate, but picked up the sierra designs back country bivy recently and it's lovely. light, pack downs to nothing, and breathable. might be worth a look.
