I had to move from Indiana back to my home state of Kansas to help family. I don't resent them and I'm happy to help but goddamn I miss all the state parks and beautiful scenery in Indiana
there's no real camping here, all there is to do is fucking drink
not to mention Indy has soil that's actually dirt and not 50% clay and rocks like the KS/MO region
is there ANYTHING beautiful I might have missed that's reasonable driving distance from the KC region?
I just want to camp again and wake up to gorgeous scenery and fuck cute girls in the woods

I lived there for three years for work. Kansas is certified dogshit for the outdoors if you're used to mountains. I will say that it has a lot more water than I was expecting when I first moved and there are a lot of lakes, but I wouldn't call any of them especially beautiful.

Find something to do outdoors that isn't reliant on Kansas not being shitty. Fishing's pretty good in Kansas and hunting isn't bad.

I'm not exaggerating when I say that every day I'm back in Kansas I'm reminded of why I left
there is literally nothing to do besides drink, I'm not even kidding. Every social interaction and event is oriented around getting plastered.
you talk to people about camping or cabins or whatever and they give you a blank stare. It's literally not a thing here.
I'm not even a snob wanting mountains, I just want something OUTSIDE

I went to Hutchinson for work a few months ago and had a day of downtime. There were some hills and a lake maybe an hour and a half away. It was alright for Kansas. That was the most outdoors thing I've found there.

Interesting coincidence for me personally, as I very recently drove into Indiana via Ohio on business and visited/stayed the night in Fort Wayne, Columbia City, Warsaw, and then South Bend.

Currently on my way back, staying at a hotel/gas station/fast food farm disguised as a town called Lima.

The good shit must all be in the southern portion of this state, because it isn't up here. The scenery is all miles of wheat fields and silos, giant industrial complexes, hotels, fast food joints, and gas stations, with wind farms thrown in for variety. The roads are big and straight because flatland, yet they manage to be annoying anyway for various reasons, such as four-minute-long automated stoplights for no reason and low speed limits on huge, 100% straight, low-traffic roads with only occasional farm access feeder roads (and these, I'm sure, are why the speed limits are so low).

South Bend is basically a shabby, seedy ghetto that somehow grew into an entire city.

To sum up, northern Indiana appears to be one giant truck stop. I thought I'd enjoy getting away from rural Virginia's winding roads for a while, but I can't get back fast enough come morning.

Are you retarded? KC is an /out/ purgatory when it comes to day trips, sure, but the Ozarks are a mere four-hour drive. I recommend Hercules-Glades Wilderness or Bell Mountain Wilderness. Literally the perfect time of year to be there.

During the summer, the Rockies are about a 9-hour drive, so you can hit them for vacation. For something a bit closer, I recommend the patch of National Forest outside Columbia MO, in particular the Moon Loop trail. It's about a 2.5 hour drive.

If you're looking for a day trip it's a lot harder, as you know, but check out the trail at Clinton Lake SP, the Baker University Wetlands outside of Lawrence, and the Prairie Center trail in Olathe. The Flint Hill trail is about an hour away for biking, and also check out Kanopolis State Park sometime, about 3 hours from KC, for some beautiful trails. Just go in early spring or late fall; there's no shade out there and it sucks ass having the 90 degree sun beat down on you in May.

Anyway, yeah, it's the Ozarks you want. Let me know if there's anything in particular you're looking for; I know the Missouri hills pretty intimately at this point. KC bros have to stick together cuz this city sucks fat nuts for /out/.

I should also add that the Ozarks kick the shit out of southern Indiana, so while they may be a longer drive, they're more worth it. (Next to actual mountains, of course, they can't compete.)

Yeah, I never went further north than Muncie the entire entire time I lived in Indiana
Mounds state park in Anderson, Brown County State Park in Nashville, IN, all the good stuff was in the central and southern areas of the state.

If you ask any KC locals about things to do that aren’t related to getting blackout drunk or pigging out on food, they straight up look at you cross eyed
Everyone there has little brother syndrome and wants KC to be considered a big-boy city get and not the shithole flyover town it really is
I grew up there and never understood it

Well, I gave you some day trips to do. It's the best you'll get in KC. It's either suck it up and get out there, or move. I wouldn't blame you for doing the latter. Bemoaning it isn't going to solve anything though. You're presumably young and living in a middle-American city geared for raising families. Is what it is. (If you want something better for /out/ in the same region, you could always move to St. Louis or Fayetteville.)

the southern 40% of Indiana is the nice part. the rest is a flat nowhereland that is really just one big farm and trucker crossroads from end to end.
Indy is just as shitty as other international zones but the Cultural Trail is great to cycle around.

Learn to hunt or fish. Otherwise fuck off hippy. Decent hunting within an hour drive in Kansas side. Great hunting within two. Three hours down to good hunting in south MO public land. Flint Hills and Ozarks are awesome. You have good fishing, great waterfowl, upland birds are down the last few years but hopefully with this grasslands act getting passed this shit turns around, and if you live on the border you can shoot at least two or three bucks a year during deer season.

Missouri I don't have much experience with outside of the Leonard Wood area, I will say it's definitely better than Kansas though. Lots of woodland and the Ozarks are popular for a reason. Probably gets better the farther east you go, away from Kansas.
