How fucked are you if you drive a rwd sports car with low clearance and you plan on doing a lot of winter hiking and mountaineering in NH. Could I get stuck somewhere on a trailhead if I get caught in some snow? Is it just a bad idea altogether? Seriously considering selling my car and buying a truck to get into winter hiking, I'm scared I'll get stuck in some parking lot or slid off the road during winter. Anyone on here does all their winter hiking in a similar car or a car with similar specs?

Both of my trucks are 2wd. I get by even in really fucked up weather, but it's not fun even with chains on. Chains are annoying, and I doubt you want to put them on a sports car.

I'd love to but no, it doesn't work. Have you considered keeping your daily driver and just buying a $500 craigslist beater truck for the winter? If you're mechanically apt you could probably do a few hours of work on it and sell it for a small profit, then repeat the cycle next winter

2wd is fine. Low clearance isn't.

You can go a lot of places in a 2wd with low tyre
pressure and some momentum. You won't get anywhere if you high centre on the first rut.

Maybe just pick up a cheap front wheel drive? I got some insane places with one of these and a winch in my teenage years and it was like 500 credits so didn't mind getting dinged so much.

You don't need all that. Get an older 4wd Tacoma. My mom's 07 has 300k on it with just maintenance and it's still going strong. I've gotten through some gnarly shit in that and it's only 2wd. 4 would be better, but 2 isn't all that bad.

Say goodbye to your compressor, diffs, swing arms, suspension, exhaust, pan, etc. Just don't.
Toyotas are great. Jeeps can perform better in no-road conditions but are also unreliable heaps of crap and enthusiasts tend to replace everything on them. If snow is what you're worried about, a pickup actually isn't that great unless you've got pretty significant weight over the rear axle, otherwise they get squirrely, especially on ice. You also have two wheeled options, which would be substantially cheaper.

If you're made of money and like replacing parts on your sports car, I suppose it could be done. It probably would handle the trips, but doing so would prematurely wear and age many components. Additionally, I don't know anything about NH winters, but around where I live we use road salt. Lots of it. A lot of these sports cars and low-clearance vehicles don't have amazing undercoating for winter. You'll definitely want to invest in something tougher than the average underspray if you're seriously considering this route.

Honestly? Find a junky old Japanese 4x4 and make it road worthy, drive that. You won't cry if it rusts and you're less likely to get stranded in a snowstorm.

I drive lowered model 3 performance, its better to not even try. The most I do with my car is dirt parking lots, even then I have a friend get out to spot me. Its not worth damaging your car.
I have an Toyota Pickup for /out/ things. I picked up the truck for 4k in April and spent the summer making it into a nice camping rig.
If you dont wanna spend money to get a vehicle just for /out/, just go with some friends. It's never worth damaging your vehicle.

Buy a small and cheap 4x4 like a Suzuki Jimny (small tires + AWD makes it perfect for snowy terrain), buy winter or 4 season tires and be done with it.

I've seen unsuitable cars make it up some pretty rough roads, so the power of the toyota corolla is not to be underestimated, but its a surprise case if it happens. I do not recommend. The dude talking about suzukis is right but if you're in the states they are hard to get. Early 2000s subarus usually go unnoticed because all the subie kids want the turbo'd versions so you can find non-turbos for cheap. The all wheel drive is plenty to get you most anywhere and while the ground clearance isn't amazing, it is better than most and I have done straight wilderness trails with mine without issue. You can pick up an old outback or forester for a good price just watch if they are around 100,000 miles because people like to get rid of them before the head gasket job needs done. Still a great engine and car for straight utility.

seconding jimny rec if you can afford it, they're cute and the smaller size helps a ton with handling. no reason to go bigger unless you plan on camping out of it for an extended time

if on a tight budget, go with one of the cheap frankenstein modded options ppl have mentioned

Height is what matters the most from my experience, especially departure angle - that front overhang on the supra is no good. 4wd is not necessary at all. Get a small econobox front wheel drive beater with a short nose, and maybe a slight lift kit. Front wheel drive does surprisingly well off-road - the majority of the weight is on the driven wheels giving you a decent amount of traction and reducing the probability of getting stuck with one wheel spinning in the air. But if anything you should be more worried about clearing obstacles than getting stuck - as i said earlier, ground clearance and departure angle. As long as you have that, front wheel drive is fine for any scenario that isn't driving through the biggest mud puddle you can spot on purpose. Oh, and if you know you will encounter a lot of snow then absolutely do not skimp out on winter tires and keep a set of chains in the trunk. If you want extra insurance then remember, a winch will pull you through obstacles no 4X4 drivetrain will save you from.
