In regular life I wouldn't wear pants with those extra pockets. In the outdoors they're good to have.

I like the Riggs ranger pants and technician pants. Rangers are heavy and have cargo pockets, technician are light weight and don't have cargo pockets (unfortunately).

I wear cargo pants and I'm married with kids, what about you ? That kind of pocket is great to put light stuff like a pack of cigarettes, a folding knife or pens.

I have had good experience with KUHL Free Radical pants. They're light, but incredibly tough. I have bushwhacked, and taken some pretty nasty falls and slides in them. They don't have cargo pockets, but other pants in the lineup do. I would imagine that those are the same in terms of quality.
