If you must handle them (i.e. to rescue them from the road or trail), ideally wear gloves, and if you don't have gloves, get your hands wet with water if you have water available, and hold them as briefly as possible.
If you must hold them briefly with dry hands to get them to safety, just be very quick about it. Don't pick them up with bare hands just for fun, only do it if they are in need of help.
