I need help /out/.
I caught a bunch of these little bastards a few months ago, threw then in a 55g tank and planned to use them for fishing. Unfortunately I have grown attached to them. Tbh they really chill. I think of them as my bros now and have even named them. I don't think I could use them for fishing now. In fact I don't think I could ever use live bait again. Have I gone soft.

From my experience live bait doesn't really make that much of a difference for where I fish, so I started just killing the bait before using it.
I don't like the fish suffering for no reason, even if it's just fish that I eat anyways.
So no OP you haven't gone soft, I think wanting to avoid suffering that isn't needed for animals is pretty normal. It's like mercy killing a wounded deer or freeing a trapped/entangled animal if you see it in the wild and have no use for the meat.
The one exception is if the animal is bad for the ecosystem, like invasive species. I still won't let it needlessly suffer, but if it's invasive and bad for local wildlife, it has to die.

OP don't do this. I suggest slowly moving from store-bought meat to local farm/butcher meat. From there you can move on to hunting your own deer and moose meat. Or look far into the future and ask yourself if raising a few cattle for milk is something you'd want to do. Then obviously slaughter them once they stop producing milk. I've not done this but I think I will some day. I imagine it's hard to kill the cows that you've bonded with and gotten milk from. I will probably struggle with this.
