I've got some questions:
- how much land do you need to run a fully self sufficient homestead?
- how much work do you have to do for your homestead daily? Would I be able to work full time as a programmer and still manage to run a self sufficient homestead?
- what's the cost of kick-starting a self sufficient homestead (more or less)?
My dream is to make cash working as a programmer remotely, while living in a fully self sufficient homestead with wife and multiple kids

1. I know that I can Google anything. But I want to engage in discussion as well, and not just get answers. That's what internet forums are for.
2. Coding job pays a lot here and it would allow me to become maybe even a top 2% earner in this country later on. I would be able to buy equipment for my homestead with this money and afford luxuries.

No one can tell you what it will cost monetarily or how much it will demand of you. This is an entire lifestyle shift that will be completely foreign to you. There is no way for anyone but you to know and you have to get started before anything else

It truly depends on your location(desert or the mother fuckin Mississippi Delta?), drive (personal), and ability.

What is self sufficiency for you?

Let’s just discuss just cattle, but know you can interchange cattle with any animals, and even somewhat crops.

Again, what do you define as self sufficiency out of the below two examples:
1. Having a cow and having it totally reliant on corn/hay? Cattle consume 2.6 % of their weight daily. My cows are 1300 lbs. that is 34 lbs of food you will need to provide $$$$$. Only upside to this: you can do this in your backyard, even though the yard would be demolished in record time.

OR

2. Let your cattle graze on native pasture, saving you in feed cost. for my operation I give each of my cows 23 acres of pasture. This amount ensures they have plenty of grass all the time. Downside to this: my land is valued at $8000/acre. 23*8000=$184,000.00.

You need to educate yourself more, and know what you want to do (accomplish). Go visit an extension office (county ag office) or university ag department.

I have a cousin with a ranch in the deserts of New Mexico. He needs 660 acres of land to sustain one cow.
I know a guy in Mississippi that can sustain a cow with only 1 acre of land.

Dang, that's a lot. After I finish my degree by the summer I plan to work for a few years and save up money, hopefully I can find a decent place to keep some goats and chickens here in Norway. Definitely want to be self-sufficient in feed for the goats. Lucky my country is not a desert

It depends on where you are. In a temperate, well watered region with short winters, to be ENTIRELY self sufficient I would reccomend 20 acres, no less. Why? Because you are going to be providing your heat with your own wood, right? You need a lot of area for different things. The longer your winters the more land you need.

Dont even bother in dry areas like the desert

What else you going to do with it? Like those massive cattle stations in australia. I think the biggest is nearly 6,000,000 acres. And you're not irrigating that, just run them out there and go find them later. And then people with no clue say OMG look how much land is used for cattle
