I found this carving on an old dead tree in the Dragoon Mountains of Arizona. The letters are actually raised, like the wood grew into the carving in the bark.

What could it mean? Is 9-29 September 1929? The local university is one of the leading research centers for dendrochronology. Maybe they'll lend me a tool to take a sample.
