Because tourists who can't read a topo map or use a base plate compass get lost within minutes of leaving established trails, and the local officials don't want to blow tens of thousands of dollars helicoptering around to find your ass.

This. 90% of my time in SAR was just looking for decrepit boomers who wandered too far off trail or drunk retards who were too crosseyed to read a map. Probably about 2% of calls were actual medical/emergency situations

Not if you like getting paid. The majority of SAR is volunteer work. The only people I knew who got paid to do SAR worked on helitack crews through the NPS, but their primary job was wildland fire. I was trying to get on one of those teams, which is why I was doing volunteer work to build experience for a resume. Never happened, though.

Aside from that I did enjoy it most days. I wouldn't recommend it as something long-term, but if you're young and have time on your side I'd say it's worth doing for a year or two.

Fix the trail, make sure there are paint blazes or plastic markers and jesus, actual fucking signs maybe, and that won't be a problem. If the trail fucking disappears into some bushes/hasn't been maintained in decades, don't be surprised when people get lost.

Most everyone who isn't an NPC understands that, dumbass. My conservationist father started off explaining beach dune erosion to me in the early 1990s. It's not some rare knowledge that only you and a select few others are the keepers of.

they put those signs up for a reason a lot of times, so you may want to research why before ignoring it. one of the mountain ranges i hike in is full of sinkholes and pitfall-trap tier abandoned covered up mine shafts, from old mining operations. its very well locally known and pretty uncommon for idiot people to go off trail and die here. but its EXTREMELY common for people to let their dogs off leash and have them fall down a 100ft pit to their death.
most of the time signs can be ignored but its dumb to make a habit of it or doing it "just because" until you know the area.

I know an area just like that too. My buddy and I found a copper mine that way. They had pulled the equipment up a century ago and left the open mineshaft, just disappearing straight down into the ground. There are a few other vertical mineshafts in the area, just open and waiting for unsuspecting personnel to stumble into.

Alpine flora takes decades to grow and it's extremely delicate. Going off-trail in a forest or other lowland environment isn't as big of a deal but once you're above the treeline everything is a lot more delicate.

I maintain trails for one of the major National Parks. My coworkers and I agreed that on any given project, between 40-50% of the work we do is directly related to either repairing damage done by people going off-trail, or to keeping people on the trail (coping stones, rip-rap, etc.)
Basically we'd be 80-100% more productive if OP's ilk didn't exist.
