here's the order of operations:
file it
then use 400 grit
then 600 grit
then 800 grit
then 1000 grit
then strop it with a leather strop block and some polishing wheel compound. it's like a stick of abrasive wax.
you can move the blade/axe forwards, backwards, sideways, you will get reasonably good results if you just maintain the same angle.
it will be razor sharp.
