All my life I thought hickory nuts were just bitter like acorns, even tried a few a few times and they were bad every time.
Now I find out that the bitter ones are just the most common ones but there's ones that taste like pecans and they're fairly common and easy to identify. I'm gonna go collect a bunch of these nuts and just walk along the forest digging small holes and putting nuts in to propagate them so I can go anywhere and just get free nuts (in 40 years lmao), thoughts?

nearly every natural grown (read: outside of the diligent care of an operation) nut tree will have nothing but disgusting, rotten, worm infested nuts. the only reason anyone can enjoy them is because thousands of gallons of water, fertilizer, insecticide, pesticide, and fungicide are applied nonstop during the growing season.

Is this actually true? I've had walnut trees growing in my front yard for 100 years and nobody has ever pesticided them once, the nuts are great every year.

You are probably extremely lucky, I definitely take your anecdote as fact.
The rest of the world deals with aphids, codling moths, scales, husk flies, red mites, chinch bugs, orange worms, blister mites, twig beetles, spider mites, crown gall, anthracnose, root rot, thousand canker disease, blight, borers, tent caterpillars, oriental fruit moth, and nematodes.

The truth is part of a trees purpose is to be a host to all of these things, to provide them food and shelter as well. You're out of your fucking mind if you listen to >>2493310, but go ahead, plant a bunch of hickory nuts, wait 40 years, and see if you can find a single nut on the forest floor that doesn't give you high dose aflatoxins. But I guess nu-/out/ doesn't like being told reality, its easier to just tell everyone that anything is possible.

My man do you realize 90% of the fungal diseases and pests that plague the world now were spread via trade and globalism within the last 40 years? An entire species of native nut (castanea dentata) was made functionally extinct within the last century.
Nobody is saying a handful of foraged nuts will kill you. I'm saying your idea for planting a bunch of hickory nuts wantonly in a forest somewhere and then returning in 40 years to collect your bounty is retarded. There is a reason farmers spend every day tending to their orchards.

Ya avoid bitternut hickory and see if you can find Shagbark hickory. Those are the two main species in my area. Go for nuts that are still on the trees but pick off easily. Put them in a bucket and remove the floaters those are full of air from insect holes.

I tried to prepare some last year. Just came out kind of bland. But theyre easier to crack open than walnuts.

Absolutely not true. Most wild nuts require processing but acorns and walnuts when boiled and toasted respectively are fucking delicious and better than anything you could get at the store.
