If someone were to begin climbing today, how long would it realistically take to be able to climb a 5.10?

i would say i can climb about 250 steps of stairs without getting overly winded. thats all i can say, i am okay. i have some kind of baseline fitness that is passable.

im asking because in order to take lead courses at my climbing gym, i have to be able to do a 5.10. i am mostly interested in taking them out of curiosity.

my gym has the same requirement. I was able to climb 5.10s about 6 months after starting, but leading was still scary. I waited for about 8 months to test, then felt OK about leading.

by the way, did you only practice once a week/on weekends?

i could probbly practice more often if i sign up for the gym near me, but the one thats a bit farther is much better but id probably only be able to go there once a week.

Assuming you're talking about relatively modern sport climbs, not that long. The specific time will vary a lot based on your personal factors I but doubt it will exceed a year. Lots of people start banging out 10s of varying difficulty their first few times outside. 5.11 is anybody's guess, really

I've been to the gym about 100 times and I climb 5.11 indoors
So probably 50-60 times to be comfortable on 5.10s
