In many ways it makes more sense to use them as pipe sections, simply plugging a reid into the end of them or attaching one to somthing like a bagpipe. In this case the elderberry section wouldn't be resonant and the main advantage is how easy it would be to form T joins.
As a child i was very fond of using these to make blowdarts, with the spike from a wild plum tree, an acorn and some grass seed tastles.
You can also use them to make a berber dart bow, allowing you to fire short darts from a regular short bow.
These really can travel a long way but the main advantage is that like a crossbow that fires stones, darts with fire hardened heads are actually worth firing at small game.
While a catapult is far better, you keep the utility of the short bow.
