Do any of you avoid drinking from large rivers with a filter? (Colorado, Escalante, Green etc.)
I've never personally had a problem with a sawyer but I've ran into more seasoned backpackers that avoid it if they can and swear they always feel unwell after.

It's always in the back of my head to avoid rivers that are polluted by industrial fertilizer, but I couldn't explain the medical science behind it.
Also you know how much river rat piss there is in the Colorado?

Yeah I wouldn't think from that kind of river unless I ahd too.

The only thing I drink unfiltered is creeks made of snow runoff while I'm at high altitude above all the chemical runoff pollutants and agricultural land.

they really ought to include better cleaning instructions with that thing. a lot of people don't know you're supposed to clean and blow the water/vinegar out after every trip, so their sawyers are full of mold.

I've always been concerned about this. I backflush after every trip and do my best to dry the thing out but it's still in the back of my mind as a possibility. You would notice a moldy taste, right? How could someone not know?

I backflush mine with distilled water when I get home, and leave it uncovered on the counter to dry out and I haven't had a problem before

My very first one I did let get moldy though but luckily I caught a whiff of it as I was packing so I bought a new one before I went out
