>NJ (4.5): bad for hiking & hunting, way too many people; great for watersports/fishing. Sneaky Appalachain trail, pine barrens are unique, comfy areas in the northwest of the state. Some bonus points for being relatively close to adirondaks, new england, etc
>Indiana (3): I don't know enough about it, I didn't make a great effort to get /out/ there, but I never saw or heard about anything impressive
>New Mexico (8): Rockies, desert, sky islands, volanoes, hot springs, rio grande gorge, diverse animal situation. Awesome
>Arizona (9): Just about everything New Mexico has, but with grand canyon, colorado river, lakes, places like Sedona. Too many people due to California & Phoenix
>North Carolina (7): Ocean, costal lowlands, swamp, comfy blue ridge & smoky mountains, there are a lot of people, but you can get to some remote areas. Not quite as spectacular or grand as the western states
