I'm looking for abandoned quarries or otherwise open rocky areas in the NJ / PA area. I know there's a bunch of sand quarries down in the pine barrens but I'm looking for more of something that looks like pic related (which is in Ohio).
Ideally places that aren't private property.

Google earth and CalTopo. Use the public land overlay so you can avoid trespassing.
Jersey may also have a New Jersey Cadastral that tells you not only who owns the land, but how to contact them if you want to check it out.

I found a database which has a bunch of locations of quarries around NJ. I used google maps sattelite to look at the ones in the central/north (quarries in South Jersey are much easier to find) but only a couple look worthwhile. Most are either still in operation or have been filled in to make houses.

My new autistic obsession is geology so I've just been looking for rocky areas or outcrops to dig around in. I've been to a shale pit in Pennsylvania that was fun and found a bunch of paleozoic fossils in Ohio. Kinda sucks there's not much like that in NJ.
