this might be a silly question but i tried asking /an/ and they directed me here, but what's best way to defecate when out camping in the woods?
how do i wipe and use the least amount of toilet paper? Do i bury the toilet paper?
this is an honest question, sorry im stupid

Dig a small hole, you can do this with a stick or your foot. pull trousers to just ABOVE the knee (or you shit in them) squat over hole, shit, wipe once, now here's the smart part: use kitchen roll to wipe, it's tougher, get a bottle of water with the sports top thing, squirt your ass with the bottle of water and clean it with one hand, dry off with the kitchen roll, normal bog roll breaks apart when wet, good kitchen roll maintains structural integrity when wet. bury all. sanitize wiping hand.
Do not use wet wipes unless they are stated as biodegradable, otherwise they are made of plastic and never rot away.
Based challenge: wipe with moss (check it first for pine needles or twigs) or leaves. personally I like bracken fern leaves, layered.
My favourite shitting spots are in the holes left by fallen trees, gives you some privacy.

If you use paper, bury it underground or burn it.
If neither of those is an option (i.e. if it's winter and the ground is frozen and you forgot a lighter), use something natural like leaves/moss, and then throw branches or something on top of the dirty leaves/moss.

Not really while out-out but on my way home from the outies I was passing a small dirt road, just entering civilization.
Suddenly something I ate earlier was in a real hurry to fertilize the soil so I had to just run to a bush on someones drive-way and I just got my pants off and bent down in time and absolutely spraypainted that bush still standing up in one big explosion, no time for squat.
The cone it flew in was frightening and physics-defying and had me incredibly surprised but glad none of it came on me or my pants.
Had some tissues in my pocket and I was out of there in 10 seconds, didn't want anyone to see me like that as cars were passing by that road so had no time for niceties, the tissues got stuck and were dangling on a twig on the bush so nobody could be mistaken what had happened there.

Normally I just squat though, use whatever I have, on long outings i prefer water bottle bidet so I don't have to deal with digging down paper and 90% hikers can't tell if it's my poop or a bears anyway.
Never near water if I can help it.

dig a hole about 6 inches deep with a spade and shit into it. i typically just use my standard alcohol sanitary wipes instead of toilet paper. i also usually just add the used wipes to my carry out trash bag. doesn't take that many to clean up; maybe two or three sheets because they're made of thick paper and soaked in alcohol. it's also not very likely that you'll shit more than once per day while /out/ so it's a negligible amount of trash in terms of weight or portability.
