I agree with some of the other posters that it's good to be prepared to prevent threats from getting close to you, i.e. have weapons with some reach.

A canister of bear spray is always an excellent idea (and is also socially acceptable to wield while /out/), but also an air horn. Airhorns are painful, around 120dB at 1m, and will send almost any aggressive animal in the other direction.
