Hey guys, in your opinion what are the best outdoor hobbies for someone on the autism spectrum? Hunting? Fishing? Wildlife viewing? Tree and plant identification? Orientation? Geocaching?

What activities should be avoided? Besides camping in popular campgrounds and hiking on busy trails.

I'm on the spectrum, not bad enough that I can't work just miss social cues occasionally and have special interests.

Obsessed with gear, for whatever the chosen activity is. Fishing is my favorite, hiking back to it builds excitement and is good exercise. Plant ID, bird ID, tree etc is very fun and finding something rare is always a treat.

This. Suddenly I'm planning a million trips to remote places where I might see a new (to me) genus of fungi or plant. It's an insane rabbit hole. Geology is similar, I recommend learning the basics and looking up hikes you're planning on Rockd or in your area's copy of roadside geology. Gear doesn't do it as much for me, but orienteering and generic "outdoor skills" sure does; try to find a map and triangulate yourself at peaks, get a cheap altimeter and learn to use it with your compass, take field notes etc. Plus people aren't around generally.

>buy pipe and tobacco to smoke while doing this
alternatively buy a regional tree identification book and start identifying trees, collecting leaves and such
basically any collection based thing. pretend its irl animal crossing

I actually tried this but gave up after a few months. It's too hard drawing from life when they move so fast.

Lol. For autists? Definitely geology. That rock shit can occupy you for years. Sedimentation, mineralogy, tectonic uplift and stuff. They'll be telling you about every rocky outcrop, boulder and hill they see.

i can vouch for fishing, even more if you go flyfishing or specimen, you basicly have to be full blown autistic to do thoose things.
my entire childhood from 6 years old and up to my first taste of alcohol and pussy my brain was 200% focused on fishing and i must say it was pretty chill, i dont regret it. wish i kept it going and didnt try out thoose other things...
