Actually, looking like a fly fisherman instantly causes everyone around you when /out/ to regard you as completely harmless, and even as a tourist attraction. A couple months back, a middle-aged lady crashed her bicycle going over a nearby bridge because she was rubbernecking me and my fishing buddy so hard. The noise was hilarious.
She was fine. A spandex-and-fanny-pack-with-two-water-bottles serious bike faggot happened by and fixed her bike. She jokingly said I should buy her a drink, which could possibly have been a come-on, but when I'm fishing women essentially don't even exist in my world unless they're also fishing. I was far too busy thinking about what fly to tie on next.
