Some cunt with a nose ring and leg tattoos got in my face last year for section hiking with my dog. She walked into my campsite and began berating me about how it is animal abuse to bring my dog on a long hike. I got heated and threw my noodles at her (missed), then ran her out of my camp site, but it got me wondering, is it wrong to take your doggo on long hikes? Say 250+ mile hikes?

Does it though? It's not like the dog is jumping around or anything, I don't even make my dog carry a pack.
My moms dog, an absolute couch potato, just had surgery on his leg after he tore some ligament walking around the neighborhood

Yeah, because dogs are totally sedentary creatures and would be much healthier just sitting at home lol. A healthy, active dog probably walks/runs that far in that amount of time just zooming around the yard/dog park. At least yours gets to hang out with you and see and smell new things. You should've thrown your axe.

If the dog is in good health and has had the exercise build up for it, for most working breed dogs a long ranging multiday walk through the wild is like peak dog. Just keep them hydrated and fed right, and keep an eye on their energy levels (don't push them, or let them push themselves, too hard) and how their feet are doing, and they should be fine.

As a kid I was always around working dogs. They would run all day. Older dogs might get tired in the afternoon but they would still try. But recently I was looking after my sister's Jack Russelish mutt, took it for a 5k run and the thing was almost dead by the end. I had to carry her the last K. And this was over grass/sand I wasn't running her on concrete or anything.

So yeah some dogs are badly unfit.

Depends on the dog and the rail really. I'd be hesitant to take an alsatian on a strenuous hike because of their genetic hip dysplasia, or a doberman or any other deep chested breed because they can get severely harmed by eating substantial meals after exercise. A collie or springer should be fine, although I find springers annoying because they're perpetually wet.

OP, your dog will let you know when he's tired and wants you to stop, be considerate of his needs and unless he's over 8 years old he will keep up with you.

I would recommend you look into what profession your dog would have had in the field, a golden retriever might not love the 300 mile trip but a German Shorthaired Pointer would instantly be on board.

Consider however humidty, temperature, ground conditions, and please PLEASE take a basic first aid course, if your dog gets bitten or hurt on the trip and you are 100+ miles away from the nearest town you need to be able to patch him up until then, and carry him if you needed to.

My dog loves the outdoors more than I do, when I even get anywhere close to the cabinet where I keep his chest rig he goes crazy and begs me to do it faster, he even goes and grabs his leash or my boots on his own so I don't waste any time.

Sometimes it's hard to get him to cooperate, and have to wait for him to be done running around to come back and rest with his water bowl

Why not get an animal that can actually be of benefit to you? Like a sheep or goat?
That can actually pack weight and give you hundreds of calories of milk a day.
