I shoot compound alot. Landing 2-5 inch groups at 60-70 yards which is sorta where I'm plateauing thanks to my eyesight. Relatively bad at trad still though.
Shooting is bows is fucking Zen though, and the silence lets me harvest all year

Do you make your own arrows too? I shoot cider spines, looked into carbon arrows too, but not sure about it yet. Any tips?

I had a job one summer at a range run by the game and Parks and on my application I mentioned that I'd shot a bow once before so they made me 'archery instructor'. I had only shot a bow ONCE up to that point.
but I'm a breddy gud shot, hoping to get my own bow and hunt with it next deer season.

Got a few medals and have successfully hunted without committing a warcrime. I like recurves, even got that meme survival folding bow for christmas, it's not terrible for something you can stuff in a bag.

Pretty damn good. I was alright in school sport but forgot about it until the covid lockdowns. I have a big backyard and had foam cubes hanging all over the place, but gave them away recently and built pic-related at 30 yards from my back porch

Because it's some kind of hybrid weapon/meditation/fitness device that you can't operate correctly when you're pissed off or drunk or have other mental bullshit to deal with. Like you can't just jam a stick in a thing and get a bullseye on a target unless you calm the fuck down and focus on posture and breathing and clear your mind. It's a really fun form of stress relief

But I'm buying a small ranch so I might have more space and time to practice there.

Not the OP but I make my own arrows and shoot only full carbon and mixed carbon arrows. What kind of tips are you after? You're already out there flinging sticks which is the best advice anyone can give

Carbon arrows weigh next to nothing and completely change the stick flinging game, you really get to start playing with the weight of the tips and the kind of fletching instead of just launching a long wooden tube through the air. There's a big price difference between mixed carbon and full carbon arrows, but I highly recommend pic-related at ~$20 a dozen on Aliexpress

Here's the back of that stand if anyone's interested. It's just a 154cm scrap pine box with strips of MDF to stop the targets falling out the back. Two legs with a third up top and a ratchet strap to stop it blowing over. The targets are Yellow Jacket 50x50x20

Hi, I shoot 11/32" and 5/16" cedar spines. Mostly field tips, 125 grain for 11/32 and 100 grain for 5/16. 11/32 weigh around 550 grains and 5/16 weigh 440 grains. I cut them to 28" plus two inches for nocks and heads, so 30" in total. My bow s 45# at 28", I draw about 29". What spines and length should I get for carbons? I want to keep to natural fletching as I shoot off shelf.
Also, I can't get the arrows to fly straight, they always go to the right or to the left. I read I could tune them by cutting them down or adding weight by using heavier heads. Any experience with that?

I would buy link-related and cut them down if need be. Keep the arrow length the same. If you're shooting off the shelf you need a spine that has a bit of wobble and flex to it, which it sounds like those cedar arrows don't have. All mine are 500 spine which is a good mid-point for compound and recurve, but if you're just shooting off the shelf I would go for a 600. That's why they aren't flying straight, too stiff. Google "archers paradox". Did you start out using cedar? Do you have any cheap fiberglass arrows?

got those in green a while ago for 20-25 bucks to fill the quiver. I spent about double for my first 3 (custom made) arrows and while those look nicer its much more fun to shoot the cheapo ones on 3d targets without having to give a fuck if they hit a rock or tree. They are about an inch too long for me but I left them that way because I read somewhere that hunting arrows are supposed to be a bit longer anyway because of the hunting tips.

Nah I don't get why people play around with different arrow lengths. The length of the arrow has to do with your draw length. It doesn't matter if it's for target shooting or hunting, the arrow length should stay the same

Just a moment ago I asked my gf to record me shooting in slo-mo, focusing on arrow flight. All of them fly nock-left (that’s what it’s called, I guess - butt of the arrow steers to the left, first thing after being launched). The internet says it’s because it’s too flexible and proposes to fix it by either cutting down the arrow (cannt do, they are the right length for me as is) or by adding weight at the heads. The point is, I don’t thing I could find heaver heads than 125gn, which they already have. What do?

I’m pretty sure you’d need lighter heads, but that doesn’t fix your issue either likely since I haven’t seen anything lighter than 100 gr. You could try adjusting your anchor point and how open your stance is to slightly shorten your draw, but if you’ve been shooting for a while that’s a pain. There’s also a chance it’s related to your release so try playing around with that. Your bow is pretty close to center shot and that looks fairly pronounced for a weak spine. What’s the draw weight and arrow spine?

I replied right after waking up, so to elaborate, bow is rated 45# at 28" and I draw about 29" so, perhaps something around 47#? I bought spines weighted and spined for 45#

Is there something on those arrows that might be smacking into the riser when you release them? Those nocks look like they're a few mm wider than the spine. Are they clipping the wood on the way through?

I shot some 600 and 570 spine carbons yesterday and they too flew off to the left. I guess I should go with 500.
I use glue on nocks, haven't seen them not to be a tad bigger than the spines. I will upload a webm of me shooting the wooden ones somewhere, so you can see for yourself.

How far off center is your riser? Do you insist on shooting off the shelf or are you open to using a "leaf style" rest which is lost in translation, like a flappy pin that sticks out of the hole. The fletchings on your arrow are hitting your riser and making it wobble to either side. Spine weights don't fix that shit, it's the physical hitting of the arrow against the bow that's making the arrow flex and you won't fix it without using an arrow rest to make the fletchings clear the riser

When I was a kid I went to a lot of traditional shoots and won a handful of medals, but I haven't really shot a bow much in the last 15 years or so.
How is it buying a bow online? Archery shops have pretty much died off and I'd dread going to a big sports store.
What good makers do you guys know of online? (for trad bows specifically)
