What do you wear to stay warm in the winter? In the temperatures I hike (10F-30F) I find just a shirt and a winter coat keep my upper body warm, but sweatpants and a liner underneath weren't enough to keep my legs warm. Suggestions? Pic is something random from google.

I just use my ski bibs with long underwear underneath. Wind/snow proof...you can wear thicker underwear as needed.

Long johns and shell trousers.
I have various weights of long john and shell trousers depending on the conditions and activity.

Long johns, waterproof boots. You really only need those snow pants if you're out there for hours in deep snow.

Wool or fleece thermals should help a lot.
Woven pants instead of sweatpants helps too since they're more wind resistant.
Also I just found a pair of fleece lined pants a few days ago and they really make a huge difference. They're not anything fancy, just some wranglers that cost $35. Definitely worth looking for something like this if your legs get cold easily like mine do.

if you're snowshoeing or doing hills/alpine shit you won't need to be as warm on the ascent

For around freezing and a little lower, light pants as long as I'm moving with a pack, usually with boots and gaiters. The gaiters are tall and in addition to keep the boots dry they also block the wind one the low legs. As it gets colder I'll add a lightweight base layer, usually just the cheap rei ones or the level 1 us surplus. I found that even the middle weight base layer is too much to hike in once you get moving in those temps. On top of that for high winds and cold I will wear my rain pants. They don't breath so they are a sweat concern, however when stopped or in camp it's a way to stay warmer without a lot of additional packed volume.

They really are nice. I'm surprised pants like that aren't more common. None of the dedicated /out/ stores I hit up have fleece lined pants.
