This. It is a curved piece of metal and handle that is rated, tested and engineered for safe use. It's also such a niche that a quick search reveals several half off/on sale for around $60 to $80 for some gear that is probably an older model but new in box.

Bullshit, one piece carbon sticks have been the standard in hockey for more than a decade, they take way more abuse than ice tools and hold up fine. Grivel has been making carbon shafts for a while now and people like them.

Fun fact I worked on a project with Mitsubishi heavy industry as a sub contractor doing material strain on load transfer systems as well as electrical conductivity testing for a carbon fiber aircraft design. They had to scrap it because it would explode if hit by lightning (in a simulated lab storm) and it was much more prone to massive failures under what would be seruos but not critical damage for the same part in aluminum. Carbon fiber is basically a polymer with some carbon in it. It will Crack and break where aluminum will bend. It's a meme only good for weight reduction on something you don't want to make fully out of polymer for marketing reasons.

The cost to manufacture, heat treat, then individually test each one to certify quality so you don't die using it is significant.

The discussion about terminology is retarded. Ice climbing gear is expensive both for being niche gear and having tight ISO or similar standards set to them. They are both produced in low numbers as well as having to be abused, so you have a great basis for an expensive item.
Carbon fiber is barely used in any models, or at least the ones meant to be used for technical alpinism.
My advice, get your hands on some second hand axes or similar. I got a pair of brand new x-lights for about 180 euros, great for starting, and once you actually know you want to keep going with ice climbing you'll spare the money to get some nomic or similar tolls.

The chassies are for moving air. The frame, roll cage, and everything else structural are some sort of metal alloy. Overspifying and mostly accurate: the crystal content of a material determines its strength and plasticity--the more % crystal usually the stronger a material is but it also is more brittle. he is correct though, despite the fact that carbon fiber is the strongest material to make them out of. Carbon fiber is not tough, it may delaminate and fail catastrophically from that one time you hit it on a rock too hard. Carbon is great when you don't plastically deform it. With steel or aluminum you can put a dent in it and it will still work. With carbon if you crack it the entire thing is liable to completely fail at any moment.

The nimbus was a glider, not a commercial aircraft. It has very specific conditions it flies in brainlet.
The E-1000 was just got certified two years ago (not by Mitsubishi) and is a very small jet.

Lightning strike compliance is a part of FAA certification. Mitsubishi couldn't solve it but this company did. Good on them. The cyclic loading on this aircraft are much smaller than the business class and commercial airliners we dealt with.

Trekking poles and ice axes aren't interchangeable. Even asking that question makes obvious you don't have any irl mounting friends and don't know enough about mountaineering to even be buying an ice axe.
