I think im gonna do it fellas, I finally have the money and resources to make it happen albeit on. shoestring budget
I'm gonna buy 2-3 acres in the woods in oregon and build an offgrid cabin on it

Do it in Washington. No state income tax, the property tax is comparable, and you can just drive to Oregon for no sales tax. And the people suck slightly less.

Keep in mind most states and all provinces have tons of laws on what types of property can do what. Very few properties are zoned for offgrid full time living. They put a lot of work into making sure you live in a pod and eat bugs. I'm getting tired of the innawoods leaving society larp on this board. Hell even teds lifestyle he lived is almost impossible to do in this day and age.

Not really a larp, its pretty easy to do. plenty of placed zoned rural residential allow you to live full time in campers/cabins/tiny homes, and plenty more places have nobody there to check to see if your abiding by the zoning laws cus your property is in the middle of the fucking woods.

Wtf are talking about? Nowhere is gonna stop you from gardening and most counties have few regulations regarding livestock. Hell even in lots of municipalities keeping laying hens is perfectly legal as is having an apiary.
Septic tanks and wells are extremely common outside of town. And no one is gonna know if you build a composting outhouse out of sight.
Your biggest obstacle would be heating, but getting mineral and logging rights to your land isn't impossible. Picking up deadfall and collecting old pallets is good way to get free firewood. Solar is expensive but doable.
Try living in the real world and stop getting you information from retards on the internet.

I moved to a old farm and its fairly off grid, it has electric but was built in the 1870's so it has hand pump wells and root cellars. See if you can find a good wood stove off of some suburban asshole before you leave. Chances are they're weren't used much and almost new. Also see if you can get a honda eu3000is generator for temp electric, they are fuel efficient and super quiet.

Find a large amount of acreage for sale online that's overpriced for it's incredibly large size, live somewhere hidden in the treeline there and periodically check if the property is still fro sale, if it is you're good.

It’s definitely a poor design for the US, but not because it isn’t “sturdy.” A-frames originated in Northern Europe it quickly became more popular in parts of the US as winter retreats. Having a star tire that’s all room maximizes the amount of radiant heating it receives from the sun, warming the inside. They’re extremely hot in most of the US during the summer, and any with a loft will be intolerable. The steep roof means there’s no worry about snow load.

OP should look into a Tuff Shed. They’re small site built structures that come as a kit, with delivery and construction priced in. They used to sell actual dwelling kits, some that were two stories and had garages, but have moved away from that and now only seem to offer small sizes. They’re not insulated or finished on the inside.

It is cheaper to buy all of the materials and build one yourself. You have to weigh the materials cost, your lack of know-how, the time it will take you, the hassle of most likely doing all of the work yourself, the tools you might not have, and the pride of having built it against just buying one and having it up in a day or two but possibly being rushed by the cheapest bidder. You’ll still have to insulate and finish the inside.

House kits were super popular in the late 19th century in rural areas (“the Wild West”). There are still a few companies making them, but they’re usually legit houses rather than single room cabins. And they all seem outrageously expensive for what they are.

I've been off grid for 5 years but get called a larper whenever I post so kind of gave up contributing. I bought a cheap single bedroom cottage in rural NE Victoria (australia) because it was close to a dairy farm I was managing that was already on septic and tank water. Everything works. I have a normal kitchen and office and can blare music and play video games like any other person. All my power tools are corded but the inverter has no trouble powering a pressure washer or angle grinder. A few solar panels and an inverter was all it took to take it completely off grid. Having the rain water tank at ground level is the biggest drain on my power though, every time I turn a tap there's a 50W jet pump that goes brrrr and draws the same power as a microwave running on high. Keep your rain water at roof-gutter level instead of ground level to allow gravity to keep the water pressure up so you can at least shit and shower if the power goes out. My house looks like any other 1960's Australian fibro cottage but I take a working holiday every couple of years to Taree as a cattle drover and stay in pic-related.

I want to talk about how hard it is to be green, but it really isn't. I just gifted most of my shit to grateful friends when I was 28ish and have room to move now

The barn-style Tuff Sheds start at $16k for a 12x20 with a loft, but if you start adding windows or cement siding that price goes up.

Then it’s up to the buyer to install plumbing and electrical himself, then a floor, insulation, and drywall (or paneling if you want to go even cheaper/easier). It’s the most realistic solution.

remote usually means 20-30+ acre plots
2-3 acre plots usually means it's just outside of town, but they sure as shit aren't remote.

oregon is one of the worst states in the country for 'off grid'. the planning goals the counties use for permitting/land use are geared for farm/timber. hell, here in lane county the nimpkish decision basically means NO development for plots under EIGHTY acres.

of course if you're foolish enough to yolo it, you might not be happy with how it turns out for you.

It's not.
An acre is 210 feet x 210 feet.
If you had 4 acres and stood in the middle and threw a baseball in any direction as hard as you could it would land outside of your property.

You always want to start with as much property as possible.
With 2-3 acres you can still smell your neighbor's farts.
10 is the bare minimum.
25 is a lot better.
50 you start to feel secluded.
I have 15 and wish I would have bought the other 15 plot next to me.

We’re on 7 (western OR) and our neighbors are about 100’ away. Way too fucking close. Luckily the west and southern property lines abut BLM forest, so no chance of encroachment anytime soon.

We started out 3.x acres and due to neighbor proximity took out a heloc to buy the 4 acres on the opposite side to prevent any other shitty neighbors and annoying noise that they’d bring with them.

How much are your shoestrings?

I don't think an average person can throw a ball 210', but regardless of that, if it's well-treed, you can be quite nicely enclosed.
I bought a parcel that's more than I needed (35 acres) that's on a slope with ridges on it too. It's more than enough but also, for people just starting out, the size of the land is hardly the challenge; it's learning the off-grid aspect, the independence, the food growth and storage, etc.

the point your making in your post is valid, but not quite entirely accurate. an acre is 43,560 square feet, it does NOT mean it has to be rectangular or even close. the common way to think of an acre though is a football field without the end zones.

example, there's a property down the lane from us that's next to the river, it's probably 60 feet wide, but really really long. surveyors marked it 2 acres and some change.

but basically buy as much land as you can; it's never, ever enough. but figure out where you'd actually be able to build, it really kind of sucks having a ton of land but the county fucks you by saying "you must build your dwelling as close to the road/other neighbors as possible, because fuck you" i'd rather have 10 acres with a secluded house than 100 acres, but forced to build on the corner of the property, 60' away from obnoxious hillbilly trash.

In fairness that $7 figure includes a few tools, but it's also me cutting corners everywhere I could. You'll notice there's not even siding on it yet, inside mostly unfinished and uninsulated. Pre-covid it probably would have been around $5k. Screws were the biggest unexpected expense; If I'd borrowed or rented a nail gun I'd have saved a bit there. But then it's harder to fix mistakes, of which a beginner makes a lot.
I'm an expert scrounger of materials; if I hadn't been in such a hurry to get it built I'm sure I could have scrounged at least $1k worth of lumber from scrap piles etc. I got all the windows for free on facebook, else that would have been another $800 easy.
For reference, my shed is12x20 with a loft. A lot of people might go smaller.

You can however use literally every other bit of natural/nonplastic waste you produce by using compost piles/honey holes etc. Obviously plant and food scraps but you can compost everything from dead animals to pocket lint (if natural fibers) to old clothes, livestock manure, etc. and that shit makes an amazing fertilizer if you do it right

I forgot to mention a few really important problems with the house earlier: the dismal internet situation in rural australia. Satellite is the only option and I pay $70 a month for the fastest and largest plan available (250gb in air quotes) which is only 60gb "on peak" and the other 150 when they feel like it at 1.5mbps max. Petrol and diesel are at least 70c a liter dearer than the nearest "town", and you can forget about buying fresh produce from the local "supermarket" when they feel like opening. Sorry for so many quotes. But real shit for anyone who's into it: Living in the middle of nowhere off the grid is rad, but be prepared to spend a whole day doing simple chores like grocery shopping or visiting a doctor/pharmacy etc. Expect to replace your tires more often and do way more car maintenance. And a big one is to expect your friends to completely forget about you when you're too far away to hang out with and you drop off social networking. It could be a good or a bad thing

Cement + water + lime applied with a broom and rubbed over with a hessian sack to make the surface rough. It dries and you do it again adding layer after layer. Generally the less developed your locale is the less restrictive zoning will be. Whoever wrote the bit about most counties not allowing hens is dead wrong. Many suburban areas with hundreds of thousands of people allow hens.

If you live in a more densely populated region i.e eastern seaboard, you’ll have to deal with more legal bullshit.

Not really, no.

The main goal is to protect and increase property taxes. The preventing a shanty town is part of this. As a secondary goals, they want to make sure you are dealing with your waste water properly. Some areas also want to make sure you are only using your share rain and ground water. And don't forget your municipality is probably providing waste and fire services. There's also the fact you are going to be selling your property at some point - it's all very well building and living in your own death trap shack but once you sell it the next guy won't know how much of a death trap it is.

Zone also governs land use - some land is reserved for agriculture, some for living, some for industry. You wouldn't want your country idyll destroyed by a neighbour setting up a motorcross track or gravel pit.

But you must know that these zoning laws only apply in some areas, not everywhere. Get as far from a city or town as possible and you should be fine. Don't expect to get away with a shack if you are in a beautiful valley, next to a beautiful lake, within a walking distance of the store. Many areas have a loophole that you can get away with a lot less infrastructure if your house is on wheels.

And really importantly, if you want to be left alone in your shack don't be a moron and mail out bombs.

That place is full LARP. The plastic on that tip up door has an R value of 0, not that there is insulation anywhere else. It also won't seal for fuck. The first time it hails, hail will come right through it.

There is no room for shit in there. You can lay on the bench as a bed and sit up to maybe cook on that table. Storage under the bench. There isn't shit else that can go on in there. Loads of wasted space overhead.

The one tiny solar panel will barely run an LED and that is only if there is a battery tucked away in there.

There can't be much weight it in anyway as those tiny pier blocks won't hold much. Neither will the dumbass stumps they have parts of it on. Those won't last 2 years before they've rotten too much to hold up a squirrel.

That place was built for Instagram likes.

Delivered pizza and took apart building in 2018 and 2019, built in 2021 and 2022, cost, who knows. I make less than 35k a year, but am a savage.

For example... My land had nothing but trees on it. So I put a trailer on it (old one that was practically being given away) then I had a well dug for water supply. That was expensive but worth it. Then I had a septic tank and field put in for the trailer... Somewhat expensive and a hassle to get it perked, but nice to be able to use my toilets and not have to go on a short hike everytime I needed to poop. Then I had electric hooked up.... That cost money too because they had to install poles and run the lines to the trailer. Also, they may refuse to hook up electric if they think your cabin is not safe enough.

Not trying to discourage you... It would just suck to put thousands of dollars into this only to realize you forgot that you need a clean water source to live. I was without it for a while and relied on bottled water.... It's insane how much water we use and how quickly things get crappy when you are having to ration what water you do have.

It's 7.5 acres, but the neighbors have a lot of lands and it's all unused. The nearest one is maybe a 10 min drive?
I do have grid electricity but that's it.

you want as much land as you can get, the exception being where your jurisdiction allows you to site your dwelling. my county (lane, or) has this insane notion that houses need to be clustered together on roads/utility easements. so you might have 40 fucking acres, but you'd be forced to build RIGHT ON THE ROAD. in that instance, 5 acres with a secluded house would be preferably to 40 acres, but no privacy.

Well turns out its 2023 and just cuz you hate capitalism and giving away money doesnt mean you cant be comfy if you want to. I picked up a shower enclosure free off craigslist, got it good and hidden and level, and the horse folks and rich beach folks have these cute portable propane tankless hot water heaters that require no power, just a propane tank and water pressure. (Ignites off batts). Screw that bish to a tree, haul a 55 gallon barrel up the hill with the tractor, boom. Long hot shower outside, good till about 50 degrees, then planet fitness.

Vagabonding is kinda fun. I will be grateful when i get the septic tank in the spring as soon as weight restrictions are lifted.

As a last note, the experience of showering outside in a chilly rainstorm is amazing. The sounds of rain in the forest everywhere, cold water everywhere except for the stream of hot water from the showerhead. Its addicting. Looking out of the top of the shower and seeing trees move gives a fun vertigo. Your brain really thinks things stay still if your in the shower

I own and reformed a traditional Japanese house in the cold north. You do not just ‘wear warmer clothes’ in the winter. The point of the open design is many, but basically it was to prevent mold during the hot humid summers, and allow breath ability from the irori and livestock in winter that would usually be kept inside too.

The engawa serves as an air barrier insulation as well, kind of like double pane glass.

Old houses are fine with insulation done correctly, just make sure it has a level breathability, and do not seal off the underfloor. My floor is heavily insulated, but still allows plenty of air into the foundation.

Old Japanese houses will never be warm enough in the -17c winter, so our solution is to seal and warm one room, or have a very big wood stove cranking.

If your neighbor, some rando, some inspector, anyone really takes an issue with you being there, then you're out. Period. Even if it's land you own. There are laws to prevent areas from becoming impromptu trailer parks or shanty towns, but for people who want to be good stewards of the land AND be tiny, you're fucked. Stealth living isn't sustainable unless you're doing vanlife or something.

cement is water proof, the hunidity from the ground/air/condensation in winter will be trapped behid and damage your wall. it wouldn't be an issue in a dry warm climate like in >>2510792 pic, but it seems you're in a colder climate
lime is perspirant and let's water out, one part lime to 4 parts sands, it's how a lot of old houses where finished where I am in Brittany in France, which is a pretty wet climate, and lime plasters hold for centuries if properly mintained
