Sweet I've been telling anons to go to Hearts Content National Scenic Area for a while and someone listened! Tho I've heard others talking about it more for backpacking and longer loops rather than just the smol old growth section. If you are there be sure to check out the Minister Creek overlook.

What kind of car are you driving? 4wd? Snow tires? Ground clearance?
WV has the highland scenic highway (39/150 richwood wv to north of marlinton and you can take if you are willing to brave the snow (im not sure how much there is right now but it was 3-4 inches last week)
but definitely cut through the highlands of wv if you have time it's really pretty and little seen
you can stop in the red river gorge in kentucky
WV has dispersed camping sites where you can just camp right off a dirt road, often along various small creeks and rivers.
