He's saying that synthetic outer layer will not keep you warm and that cotton is much better for an outer layer. He's speaking from experience so I believe him, but how does it make sense? Wouldn't synthetic hold in the warmth from your body much better than cotton?
He starts talking about it at around 6:25min.

cotton canvas makes good outerlayers. The cotton kills mantra that is being taught to American consumers only applies to wearing baselayers outside of the main hiking season, or when in alpine environments.

The reason that real non-REI outer layers have a lot of cotton in them is simply for durability.

Polyester makes you sweat pretty bad. Yeah it holds in the warmth but it doesn't allow for any breathability.

Most people dying from hypothermia is not in the freezing winter, but casual unprepared hikers getting wet in the rain and it's only ~10c or so. They probably have a cotton t-shirt, cotton sweat shirt or hoodie, cotton pants/jeans, cotton socks, cotton underwear. In freezing temperatures cotton is alright because it doesn't really get wet.
There is tight woven cotton that is water resistant. Not sure how good it is.
Most outdoor cotton gear is mix with poly, 35-40% cotton, 60-65% poly. In my experience that will dry up fairly quickly.

Outer layers are essentially just wind shells (or, in less cold weather, rain shells as well), they don't insulate. Concerning the problem with synthetics he mostly just states that goretex can freeze over in very cold weather (No comment, might be true, you certainly don't need goretex in that weather). Non-goretex synthetics, polycotton etc. are fine.

you can make a case for natural materials over synthetics without lying about the properties of the materials. natural materials are better for the environment and last longer. there you go.

newbie post. polyester is a very versatile fiber. you can make an air tight windbreaker or a sieve fleece out of it, and anything in between. there's probably more variance among types of polyester, than every other textile combined.
