I'm from north Jersey and the highlands have some decent hiking, especially in the delaware water gap area. I'm not familiar with south Jersey but I have friends and family that camp down at the pines and the shore sometimes. Also used to know people who hunt around here.

It's the most densely populated state in the country, no matter where you go in the state you cannot get the fuck away from people, the pine barrens are no exception. Not very peaceful for out activities imo.

There's plenty to do in South Jersey, and it's not as dense with people as the rest of the state.

Pine barrens are good for hiking, but very very flat and sandy, so a bit different than you might be used to. The Batona trail is a decent thru-hike you can complete on a few days.

Hunting is pretty good. I'm sitting out bow hunting deer right now as we speak. If you bow hunt you're okay. Jersey hates guns so I usually head to property in NY for rifle hunting.

Fishing is okay. Local rives and ponds and lakes have decent fishing.

There's states BETTER, but there's still plenty to do out here if you want.

There are some massively underrated spots in northwest NJ that don't get mogged by New Yorkers. Warren, Sussex, and Morris counties are nice. They don't compare to upstate NY but they're better than PA.

Lots of ruins and mines hidden in the woods too.

Ironically one of the only times I saw one of those jews here was at an abandoned cranberry bog at Whitesbog. Some jew pulled up in a nice sedan with a special need kid wearing a helmet. Was kind of weird but I was walking in mud looking for frogs so I can't really judge.
