I discovered wool this past year and I've been on a wool buying spree ever since. Merino base layers are amazing for both activewear and sleepwear. Wool blankets are amazing for sleeping under and staying cozy while sitting around. Thick 100% wool jackets beat the fuck out of down for any situation where it might get wet, burned or torn, and are much better suited for stuff like hunting and fishing. Obviously the downside of wool is that it's heavy, so making anorexic gram counters seethe could be seen as an added bonus.

But just be aware of the quality and thickness of the wool you're buying because it varies a hell of a lot both in terms of softness and insulation. There's a very high correlation between price and quality when it comes to wool, regardless of brand; cheap wool blends tend to suck.

Also I forgot to mention the most important part - socks. Life changing stuff not having cold clammy feet during cold weather hikes. I recently went hiking with a thick pair of -30 winter socks and when I got back to my car after 6 hours of being in below 0 weather I realized that I had somehow let a bunch of water into my boot and didn't even realize it (probably when I walked on a frozen puddle and fell through like a retard). My entire pant leg down by ankle was soaked, but I felt nothing on my feet. It's like magic.

Any recommendations for woollen sock brands? If I'm honest I haven't done an exhaustive search, but most seem to be something retard like 55% wool and call themselves "natural and eco-sustainable" etc

100% wool falls apart in a hike or two, they need nylon blend to actually be somewhat durable. wool is a very weak and delicate fiber.

costco/kirkland are good but only come in thick+boot cut and aren't the most durable.... but $5 a pair...
don't listen to the 1-2 years experience noobs who tell you not to wash your wool when it comes to socks. socks develop this disgusting crusty slick texture over time from sweat buildup and the fibers weaken, even though the socks won't smell. you will go from getting about 2 years of heavy use from a good pair of wool socks to about 4 or 5 by washing regularly. you can get away with not washing wool gear but not socks/underwear.
especially if you don't wear liner socks: you want to get socks marketed as "hiking" or "cushioned" the type of wool socks you want for hiking are going to have extra thickness on the underfoot. not all wool socks are like this. normal wool socks blow holes in them fast and aren't comfortable after a half day's hike.

if you get any info on those and they're obtanium i'd try them out. i've had big success with niche fibers nobody really talks about and the only liner+oversock combo i've ever really liked is discontinued.
