Any sc/out/s got opinions on food dehydrators?

Looking to make my own meals like https://www.backpackingchef.com/

Am curious is anyone here has fucked with brands like nesco, excalibur or cosori. Would like to spend under $200, but if its one of those cases where anything cheaper is gonna suck so bad I'll have to buy another I'd rather buy once cry once.

As someone who previously owned one and sold it, test your recipes with a low heat oven or something comparable and make sure you’re okay with the time it takes to run it, I didn’t feel comfortable letting it run while I wasn’t home for long periods and didn’t get a ton of use out of it as a result

This or Cosori were the 2 brands that ended up seeming like the best when I was looking into it. This old lady I was watching really liked her Excalibur because she has used them for along time, but admitted that she would probably go with the Cosori if she was in the market and had to choose. I got the Cosori and it has been great so far they are right around $150 normally, probably cheaper right now because of the black friday shit.

I just bough the cheapest one I could find. One of those round clear plastic ones and it doesn't even have temperature control, just on and off switch.
Works like a charm. I almost excluselively eat dried stuff like that outdoors now.
Just chop everything like vegetables and potatoes into manageable pieces and boil for 10 minutes before drying. Fry ground beef without oil or greas and don't season it at all. If you're sketched out by the redisual fat, you can just rinse it in a strainer. Dry the ground beef over parchmet paper ot avoid it dropping trough the mesh, or you can even use something like bugnet as an even finer mesh.
Don't bother with the more expensive ones unless you like want to have all the room you can get and plan on drying industrial levels of stuff at once. For home use and for hiking one of the cheaper ones will do just the same job for less money. You don't have to worry about capacity either too much because you can dry like months in advance.

it's not hot enough to burn paper.. put it on your stove or stone countertop or bathroom floor or bathtub if you're so worried. Takes close to 24h to dehydrate whole fish (8h on then alternate 2-4h on 1-2h off)

there are hundreds of diy dehydrators out there starting from as simple as a cardboard box and a light bulb, anyone tried any of them?
I have a couple of broken 3D printers which have heated bed (up to ~100ºC/200ºF), but I don't know if it's even worth it to have temperature control or a simple light bulb would be enough

Ideally you want a dehydrator that can reach 165F if you are doing meats, that temperature kills bacteria any bacteria that are cause for concern. If you are using a dehydrator that cannot achieve that temperature it is usually recommended that you pasteurize in the oven for like 10 minutes or so. It takes anywhere from 4-8 hours to do a batch of jerky depending on how thick I cut it. 1/8in roughly 4hrs, 1/4in roughly 6hrs, 3/8in roughly 8 hours. I bought a more powerful unit because I don't like leaving chink appliances running unattended for long extended periods of time and there was no way I was waiting 1-2 days for a batch.
