Hey guys!

I just purchased a 54" #60 traditional bow with 7.4 GPI carbon arrows that have 100 grain tips preinstalled with all the required accessories. A client at work also brought me 3 styrofoam targets that are taped up for free. Also purchased 6 fixed 100 grain hunting tips. I've been practicing for 2 days and get a steady 4 inch grouping from 7 yards already. What are some tips/experiences for practicing for and actually hunting deer in the winter with a trad bow?

Since you weren't brought up hunting, you need to find a mentor who was. Taking the shot is in many ways the least important aspect of hunting, although you obviously must be able to make your shot in order to seal the whole deal.

What will you do with your deer once you've shot it? Have you ever field-dressed a deer? Can you drag or carry a whole (or dismembered) deer to your vehicle, then secure it properly?

This is both a tip, and my experience. Get a mentor.

Finding a mentor, or mentors in my case, was what actually made me a successful hunter. Old timers love telling you all about how to hunt, so if you let one of them bend your ear for a bit you'll learn a lot.

To catch up on local deer gossip I swing by the auto shop and talk to the old timers who hang out there, for whatever reason.

There is such a thing as too much practice. Fatigue breaks down your form before you really feel tired and can fuck with your head. Your 4" group will turn into a 7, and you will get frustrated. Dont let it go to your head, put it down and try again tomorrow.

I started shooting again in the spring after not firing a bow in years and I was perfectly confident on big game out to 15meters by mid summer, and by deer season I was comfortable at anything under 20, If you practice consistantly?hunting next fall is an easily attainable goal. You will want to practice for a few months at least.
if you must hunt now get some judo points, go for small game and stump shooting as often as you can. It is a huge help in getting your range estimation and confidence down, I havent had a rabbit, squirrel or grouse run off after being hit with a judo, even a bad hit.

If he can put them all into circle half the size of his target species vital area 99% of the time, why couldnt he shoot an animal at that range?

Oh, I should add, with a trad bow, you want fixed blade cut on contact broadheads, preferably 2 blade, mechanicals are not reliable with this sort of setup.

No you don't, if we're talking about shooting practice. You can become good-enough archer within weeks or even days. The hunting itself is the tricky part, but in principle that doesn't really differ from hunting with guns or compound bows, you just have to get much closer.

I would like to trad bow hunt too but I think I'll just have to bite the bullet (kek) and get a compound so I can get some hunting experience. A bit like the rifle hunters who get the cheap Savage or Winchester packages to start with before they go out and get the rifle they really want. That's how I'm rationalizing it at least.

I chose the trad because it has only two moving parts and i want to build this skill up so in the future i could make my own bows and arrows.

practice practice practice. also, arrow weight and F.O.C. are the most important aspects in hunting with trad bow. once i started taking those into consideration my accuracy and passthrus starting getting impressive. look into the "traditional bowhunting" yt channel. he is smart and a good teacher, all of his advice i followed so far hasnt let me down.

if you practice often with trad bow from now until next fall you will def be a good enough shot by then to take a deer. practice religiously and practice as much as you can with your hunting setup (broadhead attached etc).

buck fever is a real thing, you will wanna be close for your first shot. once you are confident in your hunting try to take further kill shots. once you drop the sumbitch the fun part is over and the hard part begins. tracking and hauling the fucker. you will learn this the hard way if no one is there to help you. if you have a quad or side by side you are set. buy a good bright light for this, and carry 2 spares, along with marking tape.

idk what else to say, just general tips.
>if its a buck in rut, hang him at least 5 days
keep a sharp knife and even a spare
>always ALWAYS poke the fucker to make sure he is dead before approaching, prefably the eye. the smart ones play dead when they know they are dying and will try to gore you before they die. not common but it happens, happened to me
if he is alive, and he is weak just approach from underneath his neck and not above (in range of the antlers) and slice his throat while holding his antlers very tightly just in case. if he is strong he will prob just make a break for it, but if not just pop him another arrow so he wont run another mile and a half.

no one taught me how to do all this shit either. i learned all the hard way. to gut and skin my first deer it took me 4 fucking hours in the freezing rain at 15 years old. its possible to teach yourself but not easy.

i didnt get one by bow this year but heres my rifle buck.

Im sorry, that you didnt have a proper father figure, but that does not preclude you from getting help and advice from others. Not everything mirrows your bad experiences, keep looking and im shure you will find men to work together. Keep in mind, that any learning process works both ways, the mentor learns just as much as the student.

Now that is some hardcore advice, straight and in the face just as i like. Gutting in freezing rain at 15 is some awesome adrenaline imprint. I'll set up different targets at a desolate location tomorrow and start practicing every day, even with projectors if too dark. Thanks also for the channel info. I believe that the ones who had the courage to test life by their own are the only real survivors, i'm just sad that most of mine came from an urban environment and now i need to fully readapt to nature at a ripe age.

Don't be sorry because i'm not. I'm friends with many men almost twice my age and they respect me for my ecperience and abilities. Having a mentor has always slowed me down tremendously. It would have to be a serious expert who doesn't have the time nor patience for a beginner.

If you can hit a pie plate 10 out of 10 out to 20 yards, you're good.

You want to shoot as close as possible. 10 yards. Go for kill zone only shots. The heart.

I hunt boar with a 50 pound recurve, but I use 200 grain broadheads as I need the weight. 10 yards is what I aim for.

The Witchery of Archery is pretty good.

This is absurd. First of all, it will take you at least a month to be able to work your way up to a poundage that you can hunt deer with and shoot with it comfortably, without risking injury. If you can't do a 30 minute continuous session without getting tired, you're not strong enough to properly control your bow even on your first shot.

Second of all, being able to hit a flat, stationary target with a marked bulls-eye consistently from 7-10 yards while standing with perfect form and posture has very little bearing on whether or not you'll be able to hit a dear in the wild. You need practice with 3d targets and you need to do dynamic training, such as shooting from different positions/angles, with objects in the way, changing distance etc. At the very least you need to have consistent groupings at 20 meters, not just 10. Because you're far more likely to get a clean shot from 20 meters than from 10. Anything much more than 20 meters and you're probably better off to just not take the shot even if you're an amazing archer because the chance that you'll just injure the deer is too high.

yes, this is true. once you become a good archer, becoming a good hunter is still a huge hurdle. you have to become a better hunter than a rifle or compound bow hunter simply because you need to get closer to the target.

As for OP: Learn how to hunt squirrel with your longbow. A squirrel is a much harder target to hit, but they're a lot more frequent and give you good practice. It's kind of like training with weighted clothes. Once you can hunt squirrel reliably, hunting deer will be much easier, since you will have all the confidence in the world to hit your target, and it then just becomes a matter of finding the deer.

I could pull 60 pounds on a short longbow with ease from the start. Hence the result of my personal consultation and handmade bow. I usually do 2-3 hour sessions until it gets dark. I've also marked my bow handle with small pieces of white tape that functions as a sighting system up to 40 yards. It works GREAT! I've also started anchoring my thumb knuckle behind my jaw which gives me 29" draw and releases at 64 pounds. The position of the bow is always the same when i draw and it's only 54", 51" when stringed, so i can move around effortlessly with it and shoot accurately.

I've got a PCP air rifle for small game. Wasting 10-15$ arrows by flinging them up trees and into snow is pure stupidity in my opinion. Also even if you don't lose them, they break and splinter. I'd use arrows for big game only. Don't like squirrel meat either nor the amount of it. Also, a 60 pound bow is a bit overkill, no? I think it would pulverize a squirrel with a judo.

I lose on average one arrow every 3-4 squirrel hunts. It's not a big deal. It also teaches you discipline. Don't take a shot unless you have a high chance of success. With deer you usually only get one shot.

6olb is fine for small game. It's overkill but it won't make them explode or anything. But again, the main point of squirrel hunting is to prepare you for big game hunting.
