Soup /out/, i have a question
can they legally force you to not drive in severe winter weather? I live in south Indiana and we got some bad as fuck snow and an ice storm, and i heard somehting on the radio saying that the roads are "closed", does that mean that i'm not allowed to drive on the highways? It doesn't seem to me lie they could force you to not drive, because some people have shit to do, like me

so, of course... during hurricane Floyd, my friend and i started riding around the abandoned city. we parked his shitty Chevy Tracker at the apex of one of the causeways, watching the tumultuous water beneath us come in waves that were splashing across the lanes.

we popped the fucker into neutral with the engine off, and coasted as far as we could, propelled only by gravity, wind, and stupidity.

several cops had passed us by. it was just us vs. them. either they were on to some important cop-business, and couldn't be assed to deal with us, or they were less retarded than we were and afraid of the weather. there were literally no other drivers, and everything looked like a ghost town.

then we stole a fallen traffic light. in front of passing cops, whom we waved at as they passed.

so... tl;dr i don't think it's enforceable. there should have been several instances where we could have been told to leave or something. but they may have been too lazy/terrified to bother.

They can tell you not to drive on a specific road. They can not stop you from driving as you have a right to travel as long as you are complying with local laws.
On the other hand when they close a road it is usually impassible to most road going cars and trucks. Where i live there is a road that closes pretty frequently usually do to fallen trees or the road completely washing out due to heavier then usual rain.
You can always ride pass the road block off road and get back on it but it usually is in your best interest not to. Unless you have a truck that is specially equipped to handle it dont even think about trying.

Generally speaking, a closed road means it's not safe for 90% of road-going vehicles. If you break down or crash, the tow trucks are most likely not going to come get you. The emergency services will come get you, but that just makes you an asshole for endangering them through your stupidity. You do not have "shit to do" that is more important than waiting out a storm, unless, of course, it's life-threatening. Going to the range for some "IM SO 'MURICAN" times is not as important as "Not smashing your car into a lamp-post and dying"

For my area, if a road closes (highways too) they are physically blocked off. Either with barriers or police cars. If you do get on the road and get stuck/caught, there will be a huge fine to come get you. Possibly criminal charges.

What you are basically saying OP is, the police have told you not to swim in the crocodile infested water "BUT THEY CANT DO THAT BLARG". If roads are closed it's for a good reason just deal with it.

I've always had a problem with the "Because it effects others, you can't" argument as a bar none end all be all statement.

It's like saying "You can't say anything that offends anyone else" and following it to the dot... it just doesn't work. Everything will always offend someone etc etc.

Same goes for things effecting other people..... large volumes of traffic on the road are dangerous, so because emergency services may have to be called for an accident that could occur on a dangerously high volume road, the authorities can block all entrance ramps and slowly let people on the highway at their discretion.

See why that argument isn't the best? It's TOO all-encompassing to stand by in every scenario.... it's another perfect example of "people can't be trusted to know whats best" which is again, another statement that can't be followed to a tee.......

tl;dr: Your point needs further emphasis.

Nothing absolute here. It's a cost-benefit analysis.
The societal benefit of you being the last guy to still drive during a snowstorm is close to 0.
The cost in case you come off the road and become a vegetable is potentially high (especially since you can't work and pay taxes anymore).

Let's just put this one out here as a hypothetical situation

>You decide to go driving in the bad weather
>You have informed all relevant authorities that you do not want yourself or your property retrieving in any event
>You crash into a central reservation, and your debris blocks two lanes of the highway
>You then leave the vehicle to get help
>In your disorientated state, you get hit by the firetruck that is going to attend a fire (long shot, I know)
>You then die in the highway

At this point there is a corpse and a wrecked vehicle on the highway, effectively closing it until all debris can be removed(your corpse counts as debris)

However, you have requested they do not remove you. They will weigh the cost of the legal battle (Your family/lawyers VS state) against the cost of not keeping the highway clear, and promptly shovel you into a truck and take you to a morgue. You have, regardless, cost the state money.

Don't be irresponsible; if you want to live without being bothered by a government's rules, by a few thousand acres of land and pitch up in the centre of it. That is freedom; by the time they come for the taxes you'll be long gone.

It means that they've blocked the road for peoples protection, cause in the condition its in people are much more likely to get stuck on the road with no help....If that happens they could die pretty easily.
