>synthetic fill bag>in the Cascades and coast rangejust curious, why synthetic? because of a down allergy? price? or for the weather? just wondering 'cause i live here and i went back to treated down. works like 70% as good at resisting the elements but its half the size and weight.
>Any recsya easy.
here's what to know and my 2c:
- apex is the best synthetic insulation for sleeping bags, up isn't as good.
- if you want to go with apex i would big time recommend going with a quilt instead of a mummy bag for bulk reasons. if you want a mummy bag i'd big recommend going treated down instead. if you want a mummy bag and you're allergic or something just reply again and i'll give you a rec.
- 2.5oz apex is good to ~45°F
- 5.0oz apex is good to ~25°F
- 7.5oz apex is good to ~15°F
- a 45 degree apex quilt's about 1.1lb
- a 20 degree apex quilt's about 2lb
- i really don't think 20d breathes good enough for 5.0 and 7.5 apex i would go for 7d or 10d every time.
- apex will degrade from compression faster than down.
my rec for a full synthetic washington setup would be a 5.0 apex quilt and a 2.5 apex quilt. use the 2.5 as both your summer bag and your liner to boost the comfort rating lower on the 5.0 quilt.
sewn in footbox for the 5.0 and zipper -> blanket style for the 2.5. and i'd splurge for 7d if within budget.
if you got a friend you can borrow a sewing machine from i'd really urge you to just go to plebbit /r/MYOG and make your own.
apex bags are easy to make, its a continuous insulation that doesn't need baffles so its a really ez babby's first sewing project. i haven't made a 5.0 before but 2.5's cost $50-100 to make tops. really cheap.
if you want to buy one ready made:
enlightened equipment
arrowhead equipment
mountain laurel designs
etc off the top of my head all sell good apex quilts. and plenty more.
