going to the US some time next year
couldn't care less about the shithole cities so i plan to hit every site of natural beauty i can in my time there
what are the must do /out/ings?
seen and heard amazing things about the national parks, are they all worth a visit or can some be avoided?
any places worth going that aren't classified as national parks?
i am experienced and not adverse to mountain climbing and multi day hikes

What time of year? Spring/Summer is when you will get the best view in many places due to the vegetation being at it's peak. Many places can look pretty sad in the late fall/winter compared to when everything is green and full. I'd assume that out in the desert it wouldn't matter as much though.

Plenty. Southern Utah. Pretty much the whole lower half of the state. In St George there are 8 state parks that are on par with national parks. Plus you'll want to see the north rim of the grand canyon rather than the south rim which is fairly close to St George.

This. There is also no point to going Further east than Colorado. The east coast is a city hellscape from Florida to Main and what isn't overcrowded city or urbane sprawl is over rated, underwhelming, overcrowded tourist traps.
Fly into Denver International, drive I 70 to grand junction and spend a few days there, follow i70 to Utah and head to Moab, go through canyonlands to the grand canyon, get on i15 north and head to Idaho, either go to glacier or Olympic national then make it to BC Canada and fly out from there. Check out Olympic national or North cascades national parks and the Olympics/Oregon coast.
Olympic national park has more to offer than all the parks on the east coast combined.

Correct. I lived all up and down the east coast for work, for years. I took a pay cut to get out of that endless urban sprawl and have never been happier to get back west.
