Those look a bit more uncomfortable and aggressive. I can usually forget my kahtoolas are on and they're fine in the the conditions you're concerned about. I've worn them on frozen ground with snow up to my thighs, and glacier hikes.

I'm almost certain that didn't happen on low-to-medium angle slopes that the OP said he would be hiking. I've used spikes in the Adirondacks, Catskills and all over the northeast (low, medium, and even high angle slopes) with ice and mixed snow/ice and didn't experience that problem a single time.
The OP will be fine with spikes or trail crampons. He doesn't need full-on crampons for what he will be doing. Like I said before, it would be overkill.

Unironically this. I have done exactly that numerous times in the winter and shoulder seasons with zero issues. I have my doubts that you even live and hike in the northern 1/3 of the country, in winter. If you do, it's in some flatland state with no real terrain. Or you just don't go /out/ much and lack the winter experience to know when it's best to use spikes vs. insteps vs. full-on crampons vs. snowshoes or skis.

Reddit isn't a monolithic entity, retard. One of the posters was able to use spikes for most of his winter 46. The other used Hillsound trail crampons (not to be confused with the crampons you recommended) and knows someone who did several rounds with just spikes. This is on medium-to-high angle slopes where you will likely encounter all sorts of snow and ice along your journey.

Also, it's worth pointing out that you must be 18 to post here.

But they kept moving around and hat to be adjusted often. I proceeded to lose one going downhill as it began to get dark. It fell off somewhere and I guess I didn't notice until it was too late. The other came off not long after. I managed to grab it as it happened but one microspike is a bit useless.

Usually starts with some freezing rain in the evening, a couple inches of snow overnight, and then everything is melted and muddy by the end of the week.

Sadly I haven't gotten around to the Ozarks yet but hike year-round in the Allegheny Plateau which has fairly comparable terrain.
I often deal with those variable conditions in March and April where I live. I'll usually bare-boot it with my winter boots that have good traction and use poles if there's any snow on the ground. I'll also carry microspikes in my pack in case I encounter a tricky section where they would be helpful.
The Kahtoola knockoffs that others recommended would be your best bet if you don't want to get regular Kahtoolas. My first pair was a knockoff brand and they worked fine. They're lightweight and compact enough that it won't be a big deal to carry them on a thru-hike.

The ones OP posted will slide around on any real ice. There's too many spikes which creates too much surface area and they slide like ice skates. You're better off with proper crampons or boots with softer rubber compound that will grip on ice.

I’m talking about the Ozarks ffs, not some extreme conditions.
The coldest it gets here is single digits overnight for a few weeks.
Most of the hiking is low angle, with sections of a couple hundred feet in length getting up to a 30 or 40-degree angle.
There’s plenty of trees I could and have used to help myself up these hills when they get a bit icy, I don’t strictly NEED spikes at all, but I’m trying to make it a bit easier for myself since this will be a multi-day trip where I’m trying to put in miles, and not just fucking around on an overnight like usual.
I’m not getting full-on crampons so just shut up with that irrelevant crap.
All I wanna know now is which Kahtoola clones are okay, and which are dogshit.
I’m asking here because this place is still more trustworthy than Amazon reviews

They're all about the same. All the chinese knockoffs come from the same factory, guaranteed. I've used my pair for a few years now and they've worked fine. Make sure you keep the strap-things that come with them, they make all the difference in keeping them snug to your boots.

I've got a pair of Hill Sound chain crampons and they're fantastic, best I've ever owned. Never tried real spikes but I've had a few different cheap brands of these kind, the Hill Sound ones are pricey but I'm really impressed compared to the cheap canadian tire ones I've picked up before. Only complaint is they pick up packed snow a bit worse than the less aggressive ones, but they're incredibly grippy in every situation I've tried, particularly good for rocks+snow on hills, lots of confidence descending, and still in good shape after a couple years of kicking them against rocks to get the snow out so they must be pretty durable. Get ones that fit well, it should take a bit of effort to get them around your boot.
Cool tree mostly unrelated.

spikes are meant for stuff like dayhikes where just the top of the mountain's icy. mountains with patchy ice where you don't want the spikes on half the time. and for every hike where you don't need crampons but want something just in case.
90% of the appeal is you can rip them on/off your boots/runners in seconds, and that they fit onto normal non crampon compatible boots and trail runners.

crampons have big ass spikes on them. not only are they bulky but you have to put spike protectors on them and put them in a bag so as not to rip your pack open and ruin your gear. spikes can just get tossed in your pack's brain or something and its no biggie. they pack down to nothing. most people north of oregon throw them in their bag half the year on every hike whether they need them or not.
