when adding water, don't add it straight from your community water line/tap. 99% of the world adds chlorine (and more) to the water and this will kill the fish if added too soon in too large of volume
you will need to add the water gradually and wait (dilute it into the existing livable water the fish are in) to let it evaporate out, adding it into containers first then pouring it in is another option
you can add "water fix" stuff to correct for too much chlorine, etc in bodies of water, but that is not an optimal solution
keep some mosquito fish in the pond along with the koi. you wont need to feed the koi if you have even 1-2 small plants in the pond, to attract insects
