OP here, I usually leave the coffee at home and drink tea while I'm /out/. But I was thinking about picking up an Aeropress or one of those GSI collapsible drip coffee makers. I'm also a little nervous about grinding the beans beforehand in case they spill or the container I'm carrying them in rips or gets punctured. How do you guys avoid this? I've seen those mini hand grinders. Plus it'd help keep the beans fresh.

and that is indeed a fallacy. you would need pure caffeine to wake up. or pure coffee powder for shitting like a boss.

The body gets very quickly used to caffeine. the stimulating effect decreases with every cup of coffee. Caffeine should only used in emergency situations. Against circulatory disturbance or against constipation.

I think advertising told people they need coffee in the morning.

For those of you who want to try pine needle tea, don't make the same mistake I did. There used to be a warning here about Hemlock Trees, but let's set the record straight: Hemlock trees are not poisonous. The Hemlock tree is coniferous tree and a member of the Tsuga genus (family Pinaceae). The poisonous perennial, herbaceous hemlock plants that grow near streams and in fields (e.g. water hemlock, poison hemlock and hemlock water drop-wort) are members of the family Apiaceae. Therefore the two are TOTALLY unrelated and bear no physical resemblance to each other either. The reason why hemlock tree came to be named thus is because someone thought that when you crush the needles (it's a pine tree) the smell is similar to that obtained when you crush poisonous hemlock leaves, but that's the ONLY connection.

As with any wild food, be sure to collect from an area free from pollution and avoid any trees with disease.

Do not consume this tea if pregnant or breastfeeding.

Not really an /out/ guy, but I AM a coffee guy. If you like your coffee to be rich and dark, the Aeropress can get it close enough to espresso if you use enough grounds. It can also be diluted with water until it's a normal-strength cup, but the proportions they recommend generally give a strong cup.
Drip coffee makers are not slouches, but they don't lend themselves to the same strength that would would get from a Moka pot, Aeropress or Handpresso.

You could also use a funnel and some cheesecloth to make your own drip coffee maker, Fyi.

My mess tin. I boil my food (I get to take home lots of boil-in-the-bag meals/MREs because army) and when I've taken it out, I just pour the water into my mug with the coffee powder.

I always think back to guys conquering mountains in the 1800's wearing more weight in wool clothes than most people own in gear, packing in all iron implements with some mild steel, tents that didn't have carbon fiber poles, russian furnaces for stoves (Stacked liquor burner tin can) and routinely hauled firewood above the tree line in order to eat/drink at night, AND STILL MANAGED TO ACCOMPLISH THINGS.

Just kinda makes you think about "hard" things before you undertake them......Kinda shows that common sense is the most valuable gear you'll ever pack.

Yes. Camping, etc. and on full day hunts as well. Mostly rifle and flintlock season, when it's cold.

I have a percolator not quite exactly like pic related which I take camping. When not being employed to make coffee, the boiling tin is good for cooking meat down into a stew/soup. Dual purpose justifies the weight, imo. It is aluminum.

When hunting, I carry a bum stove, some denatured alcohol, and a copper mug I have, and I make cowboy coffee directly in my mug, one serving at a time.

I just take regular Maxwell House or Folgers grounds with me in a sandwich or quart-sized ziploc bag, depending on how long I'm going to be /out/.

I use pic related. I pretty much just put water in it, dump in some ground coffee from a baggie, then add heat. if you have some snow. crunch a little bit into an ice cube and drop it in. it seems to make the grounds sink. letting it sit for a bit will do it too. I always mean to get some of those instant coffee packets but, never actually get around to buying them. I guess I just don't mind chewing my coffee all that much.

This seems to be pretty similiar but a little more price. The plastic thing on the lid is shit and it may melt when used.

No idea if they ship abroad or not.

Anyway, if I understand correctly, that gsi kettle weighs 900gr and these cheap finnish ones are about 150gr

How is it, I heard it's probably one of the best instant coffee's you can buy. I might try and pick some up and give it a shot. I'm really not big on Starbucks coffee though. Any types that you would recommend trying?

Starbucks is unfortunately one of the best instant coffees. Tastes great (for instant) and the packages are really small. The price is ridiculous though.

Those Nescafe 3-1's are the worst, shitty taste and the single packages are very bulky with all the powdered cream and sugar.

My local store had a sale on all instant coffee last year so I bought one of each and had my GF set up a blind taste test.

It turned out I liked Nescafe's Tasters Choice Classic Select Arabica. A little more expensive than their regular stuff but WAY cheaper than Starbucks for comparable taste.

I made little individual packets with scrap food saver bags but really you can just throw a weeks worth into a ziplock and call it a day.
