hey /out/
any tips on hitchhiking and the sort?
im planning on going hitchhiking from the central north island of nz all the way to stew island before march. gonna be making a few stops along the way to do the great walks.
i'm experienced in hiking and bushcraft but there is no way i'm walking the length of the country so i thought i'd give hitchhiking a go.
any advice would be great, ty

Be visible. Be clean, with a good pack, so that people don't think you are a bum. Have a sign for where you are going. Smile, look at the drivers as they go past.

Plan your position on the road - you need to be somewhere that drivers can see you, have enough time to decide to stop, have a good space where they can stop and start up again. This will need to be a lot longer distance if you are on highway vs a country road.

Just smile and try to look fun and harmless.
Don't get in the car with anyone you suspect of being drunk, listen to your gut, and don't hitch in the dark. Before you put your thumb up, make sure you have an excuse ready, just in case you get a bad feeling and need to bail out. And yeah, don't hitch at night, that's when the predators come out to play.
Hitchhiking is easy, if you do it enough it feels like no big deal

Hitchhiking has become almost impossible in the UK, covid ruined people's mindset about it I think and even now that "stranger danger" concept has become ingrained.
It's really hard to get picked up, even as a woman.
