A handful of these are actually pretty helpful tips for car camping. I think 5, 6, 18, 21, 26, 34, and 39 are good tips for a novice.

Some of them seem neat, but maybe more trouble than they're worth.

Some of them are pretty frivolous intended for 30 somethings to keep their insane kids entertained.

Some of them are total bullshit (12 and 16 in particular).

These aren't really "skills" of any sort at all, but they are helpful hints for someone who is a pretty casual car camper.

Well that's most people I see on hiking trails.

The ones with 60/80L backpacks for a couple days, 4kg tents, huge sleeping mats, tin cans, beers in the cooler, huge soap dispensers, full tableware and flatware sets... granted, I'd kill for their comfort on trails, but I'd rather kill myself than carry their packs.

These things are relatively defined by each individual and each must experience it for themselves to understand and act. And there's nothing wrong with that. We all packed too much for one trip, regretted it and learnt from our mistakes. It's how you learn.

Okay, serious question for you guys.
What size of pack can you actually justify for 3 days of hiking?
I see people suggesting 60 Litre packs and that just seems like total overkill.
40 Litres seems more than ample for most applications.

I've been to a place (I was ten or eleven, just over 20 years ago) which had sod lawns, no gravel, all paved roads, groomed shrubs and trees, and grounds keepers to keep the place clean and neat. For me it comes down to difficulty of the hike, the season, if I am alone or with people (and if so, who am I with?), and how much exercise I want to get, because I go /out/ partially to get/stay in shape.

Also I use an external frame, I think the compartment space is 48L

depends, if im with my family i might bring a 12kg pack(i only have one 80l backpack that i use, it fits my body and works fine even when 1/4 full) for a 9 day hike or if im with my pals i might have a 17kg pack for a two day hike. if we are going to sleep in hammocks in november(we did in 2013) in heavy rain after a non-trail 9 hour hike. youre damn happy for the thick soup dinner and a can of beer before you go to sleep. extra weight is sometimes worth it.

I'm just saying that sticks have lots of uses, and that the fact that they have lots of uses means nothing.

You CAN use a stick to dig. Regardless of if a shovel does the job better.

For 3 days hiking, all your weight is going to be in your food and your sleeping arrangements.

If you cut down food (sacrificing fibre for pure nutrition), and camp w/ a hammock and tarp (climate and vegetation permitting), you can get away with 30-40L.

If you want to have decent shit and you need a tent and sleeping bag, you need to go more.

Also, depending on how many people you're going with, you can cut down. I.e. many items can serve multiple people. One communal hatchet/machete, one communal tent, one communal tarp, etc.

I have a 60L rucksack. Winter sleeping bag takes up the whole bottom compartment. Then clothes, waterproofs and food in most of the rest with ancils and other equipment in the outer pockets, and water. This generally takes up 60 litres. If I'm bringing my usual one person tent I put it in the bag with everything else, if not I strap it to the outside straps. Same goes for my mat - if inflatable, inside, if rollmat, outside straps.

60 litre is what you really need for more than 2 days.
