Avoiding mountain lions at night

I have been wanting to go on night runs/hikes on a trail near me but the problem is that mountain lions have been spotted a decent amount in this area (CA btw). How can I avoid getting mauled by them?

they're pretty harmless unless old/sick/starving; more often than not you won't even know they're there. bring some bear spray or an air horn and you'll be fine.

they're also most active at dusk/dawn, night time shouldn't be much of an issue.

On the other hand, when other anons tell you that cougars are virtually no threat to people, they're not taking into account that you radiate fear and weakness everywhere you go.

This. They do a hissing zombie type screach. Like a pissed off house cat type thing but loud. They will eyeball you so it's best to just back away slowly. Don't turn your back to them. We see them occasionally here in colorado. Mostly bobcats, but you do the same with them. Bobcats tend to be more pissy but usually take off right away.

yeah the sound they make is really weird. heard one the other night (rural oregon) while out with the dogs, it sounded like a banshee. turn on my headlamp and I just saw a pair of eyes staring out at me from the bush, was surreal.

what was interesting is just how little the dogs cared, they're both terrified of cows, but big cats are apparently a non-issue.
