Basically laws, rules and regulations are a bitch, but if you avoir getting caught you'll mostly never get in trouble, the paperwork is just not worth it for the local gendarmerie to bother.
Had a small permanent meeting site with friends in a very small wood in Normandy near Évreux, we made large fires that were visible from the road and from nearby houses and never were bothered by the gendarmerie.
Basically don't be a dick to the locals and everything will be fine. There is a particularly high disdain for the city folk who we call the bourgeois, and the main reason we hate them is because they act like they own the place. Don't do that. Integrate. Offer some alcohol to the local peasant that could bother you and you'll have made a friend. Learn the language, act like you care and want to try hard and you will be liked, you don't even have to try hard, just act like it.
