Best temperature for plant growth

Lower than 85 F they grow slowly, and higher than 85 F they gain no benefit (probably start losing benefit at some point, but I don't think I've reached that since our highest is the mid 90s here)

Is there any scientific study/etc that confirms this?

I'd like to add that while there are plants that grow better in the 60s-70s, these plants typically grow a lot more slowly and have much lower calorie output.

So as far as "carbon capture speed" or "calorie production speed" goes, I think 85 F is probably the best temp.

from what I've heard that seems about right, above 30 degrees centigrade plant stress gradually increases and photosynthesis eventually shuts down. IIRC plants take CO2 and perspire water through the same organs which they shut-off in high temperature to avoid water loss but then they also cut-off CO2 intake so no photosynthesis = no growth. now there is a situation of both high heat and high water availability, I suppose tropical plants partly adapted to it but you can only go so far, at 60 degrees centigrade any living cell will practically be cooked. slightly below 30 centigrade is the sweet spot of most temperate plants.

Intuitively one might think yes, but when I think about it, it doesn't make sense. Wind makes animals cold by continuously "resetting" the temperature of the blanket of air around their body (aka convection). Meaning that any warmth that had seeped into that air from your body heat is gone.

This doesn't make sense for plants, because plants don't generate heat.

However, I had a bunch of tomato plants die in conditions of windy cold rain. the plants that were most sheltered from the wind managed to live (see pic).

Is this directly due to the wind making them "colder" somehow? Or is it due to the wind dehydrating the leaves, and maybe the plants water transport rate (from root to leaf) is slowed down in cold weather, making the plant dehydrate to death despite plenty of rain. What do you think?

if the plants are wet from rain of whatever and the wind blows it will definitely cool them through evaporation, same as sweating. leaves will probably be hurt more than tree trunks. perhaps cold dry wind will also cool them to some extent if plants lose moisture in some other way. I'd say wind can not so easily dry (and hence cool) wood through the bark, if at all, but leaves are quite variable, some are more hardy and waxy, others are very gentle and "naked".
you could put a thermometer outside in the calm and start a small fan to blow on its bulb and see whether the temperature drops. I'd say it should stay the same, if the bulb is wet it only drops to a certain level and will drop no further, depending on relative humidity of the air which can be calculated this way. I think that method is called psychrometry or just google wet bulb+relative humidity.

I think the reason why we perceive even dry harsh winds to cool us is because they break through our insulation layers, but plants don't have any of those. If you put thick straw around plants it might create a pocket of stale air warmed by the mass of the soil underneath, and then strong winds could disturb that microclimate even if dry.
