Hey guys. i got a few months to kill come June and was hoping to finally visit for some long distance hiking.

With my nationality i get 90 days visa free so i'm looking for something that would last 2-3 months and suitable for the months of June-July-August (give or take a half month either side)

I seemed overwhelmed with choice so i would like some input from the locals.

i should add i dont care about starting and finishing a complete trial, it can just be part of one of the big ones i dont care.

I also would like a popular trial as i am ready to bloom and hopefully meet some people.

also decent town access along the trial every few days would be good

The AT will definitely have the most people and easiest town access. Trail Days is a three day thru hiking festival in Damascus, Virginia in late May. It fits your time frame and is a super popular rallying point for people doing the AT. They’ll generally time their hikes to make it to Trail Days.

If not the Appalachian Trail, avoid the Southwest and the Deep South in general that time of year if you can; it’s brutally hot.

it seems the most popular is Northbound. do people do it Southbound? that would be perfect as flight from Europe to NY and so cheap.

or will i have to just join somewhere in the middle and go North?

If you do go through the AT, try to not wander too far from the trail. One part of my family is right beneath the trail in Pennsylvania and they frequently go up near the trail to do work and they're not a fan of people on their property. I've been stopped by some distant relatives after several years of seeing them last and they always ask who I am and such, which I'm kin so they just roll on off. I don't know how other parts are

One big reason people prefer N to S is simply that it's much warmer closer to the equator, so you can start earlier in the year (early March) and largely avoid cold weather the entire way north. If you hit Maine in November or, God forbid, December, you're in for a shit time.

The other big reason is that Katahdin is much more dramatic a final destination than some random hill in Hicksville, Georgia.

thanks. south to north it is, as i will be starting in somewhere around mid june once i get my shit together, what is a good location to start and buy the needed camping supplies for the trip?

The best bet is to buy everything you need locally and take it all on a few shorter trips first. It gives you an idea of what works and what doesn’t, what you like and what you don’t, what’s redundant and what’s missing, and so on.

For US flights, the TSA list what’s allowed as a carry on, in checked bags, or banned all together. You have to check pocket knives, trekking poles, and I think tent stakes. You can’t bring stove fuel at all. Not sure about bear spray (probably banned, but most people don’t hike the AT with it anyway).

For everything you need when you arrive: Walmart. Plus it’s America, and if it’s your first time here you kind of have to visit a Walmart.

By June, a large number of hikers will be near Shenandoah NP (due to Trail Days being in May, which is about 250 miles to the southwest). No matter where you decide to start, you’ll have to find a shuttle service to get to the trail. More popular areas have lots of options. If I were you I would and wanted to be social I would start Northbound at Harpers Ferry in mid-June as this is where most hikers will be, then I would follow the bubble up to the New Hampshire / Maine border, which will be about 80 days. Then I would use public transport to get down to NYC to fly back to wherever you're from.

Best advice ITT. If you’ve never done anything like this you’re going to destroy your feet within 150 miles. I’d buy your shoes in April and start wearing them every day. If you can, go on some outrageous 30 mile hike 3 weeks before your trip so you can preemptively destroy your feet and get some good callouses. Otherwise you’ll get stuck in some motel recuperating and losing all the friends you’ve just made
