I will spend next month in San Pedro, California and I want to be doing quite some fishing.

I have been looking up some videos on youtube and seems like most people are fishing off the Pier using dead fish as bait.

This type of fishing does not interest me much however, I prefer casting and reeling in using spinners, jigs, spoons etc. Active fishing.

Anyone has any spots or recommendations? Can I go to any shore and do some longdistance casting? Doing some jigging off the pier? Any nice rocks to stand on?

Anything I should think about? I am an experienced fisher, but only in lakes for perches and pikes and stuff. Never fished in the salty waters, never in the USA.

you might want to rent a kayak and cruise around trolling or casting for better spots?

That is a really good idea. Do you know if theres parts other than the terminals where you cant kayak? Like maps of areas you cant go

i mostly fish san diego bay, but the same species and similar habitats are found in LA harbor.

for shore fishing with lures, find a jetty, breakwall, or similar structure, and fish it with plastic swimbaits or flukes, 3-4 inches, t-rig, dropshot, weedless jigheads, underspins, all should be effective. fish low and slow on the bottom. the sand bass will be lurking in the
transitional areas between rocks/structure and sand patches. spotted bay bass will be in patches of eel grass in shallower water - if you're pulling up grass from the bottom, you're in the right place for spotties. fan cast and be mobile, if the bass are around, they will bite. larger spinnerbaits or tailspins (look up the jigpara spin or damiki axe blade) can also be very effective fished right above the bottom (not on the bottom as the trebles will snag).
not sure what rod you'll have but 7'-8' medium or medium heavy rod, 10-20lb braid with a floro or mono leader is what I like to use. sandy bottoms may also yield a halibut or two.

if you get out on a kayak, trolling a large spinner bait or swimbait a few feet off the bottom will help you find the fish. where you get one bite, there is usually a school stacked up on structure. from a kayak, you can also drop krocs or similar metal jigs straight down and if a bass is there, he'll bite it.

if you're not averse to bait fishing, going out onto the jetty and fishing a spider hitch rig (or even just a flyline with split shot) with small chunks of shrimp will almost certainly yield opaleyes, small bass, and other rock dwellers. mono recommended. cast out just past the rocks, wait 30 secs, then recast until you find the fish.

I never surf fished that far north but the local beaches probably hold surf perch - look up carolina rigging for barred surf perch using berkely gulp sandworms.
