I've had bad luck with matches so I just stopped using them. You could try a light wax coating maybe.
Matches suck outside, wind, they just don't work sometimes. It's not worth it.

You dont, either buy them or make fire without them. Trying to somehow make those DIY is much more work than making fire without matches. Probably more expensive than buying them too, unless your time isn't worth anything.

Why not buy a 4-pack of decent lighters?

They are also waterproof in the sense that I've put them in the washing machine many times and they never break.
