also, Op, you really don't need any tools, if you think you find anything "big" or "important" tell some local paleontologists or park staff know as well as this tread, depending on the rocks in the area you could find anything form clams and oysters, shark's teeth, if you're lucky some fish. if it's in a gravel bar kind of setting it takes a good eye to pick out fossils from the rest of the "junk". don't be upset if you don't much of anything when you go /out/
