Apply to usajobs and any place you get referred past the robo computer, start cold calling ranger stations for usfs or blm guard stations. I know for a fact some of them end up going through several waves of lists before getting enough. Last season or two ours have halved total number of units and we are staffing half engines.
Just introduce yourself, ask some questions, ask when you can find out if people have been hired.
Government tries to robotize the process for affirmative action or whatever but the people at the guard stations have always been much more personable. They just dont want unreliable people.
Id look for low population density areas as young bucks get bored to tears of them. Eastern Oregon and Washington or North California. Theres quite a few places that end up as career liftoffs for others to get a foot in the door one year, or an open promotion, then bail to a more desirable location next.
Let them know you are pack test ready too. Tell them your time with 45 lbs. Dont be a fatty entering land whale daycare on day 1.
