Sawyer vs Grayl vs Katadyn

Which do you use? The Katadyn ceramic filters are obviously the best but they're 3x the price of a Grayl which are 3x the price of a Sawyer. Would you trust a Sawyer mini on putrid water with a rotting and bloated animal corpse in it?

Water filters are the biggest consoomer meme out there. They’re ubiquitous yet no one asks why. The evidence for their use is put forth by the people selling them.

I’m not saying there’s zero risk in drinking untreated water, I’m just saying that risk is very over exaggerated. I always treat my water, but I use Aquamira because I find it the most convenient. It’s the least effective at combating a nearly non-existent risk.

It’s a misconception. It’s like saying a certain set of lottery numbers are the best because they’ve statistically won more times.

Filters kind of remind me of people who eat pre-prepped backpacking food with a spork, and never question it. They’ll compare sporks (“this one has a longer handle, but that one is lighter”) but ignore the spoons that would obviously work better for them.

After drinking what should have been safe water from a clear white water stream and ending up with liquid blowing out my ass and my mouth at the same time, having to make the decision to allow myself to vomit on myself while blowing the liquid shit out away from my body, I could not disagree more with what you have said here.

It took 4 hours to go from normal to liquid spurting from both my holes. Fuck that. If I wasn't half a day away from help it can become a pretty dangerous situation.

I boiled it. I used to always just boil. I may have cross contaminated I'm not sure. I was so fucked up by it that my memory is a blur. I remember it blowing out both ends, and having to hike back to my car while my ass was completely raw. For about an hour, maybe two, I was completely destroyed, dizzy, sweating, ass leaking with brown juices. One of the worst experiences of my life. I was always told that white water is a natural filter. I'm sure I did get very unlucky, probably one in a million or more.

This event had such an impact on me that I now always carry cyclizine (anti nausea) and impodium (anti diarrhea) meds with me, but at the time it was so extremely violent and quick that those meds wouldn't have helped me. It only lasted 2 hours max.

A steripen. Faster than filters, boiling or chemical treatment, and works against viruses which are important since I take a lot of holidays overseas.
I use a Sawyer Mini as a backup when I'm innawoods and a packer of aquatabs as a backup when I'm innathird-world.

At least the linng of your stomach and intestines wasn't eaten away which is what a person told me had happened to someone they knew years ago when drinking from a fresh water spring, the same spring I had drank form many times in the past.

Les Stroud, had said that he wasn't worried about drinking water when he was out on short trips because he knew he had about 7 days before anything would start to kick in if he had drank contaminated water and by that time he would be back home and take a pill.

You generally don’t even need a pill. Most water borne illness will clear up in 48 hours. If you go to a doctor because it hasn’t, they’re not going to test you for anything until after they’ve given you a broad spectrum anti-parasite medicine (the horse paste you heard about on CNN) and an antibiotic.

Giardia can stay in your intestines for at least a month. I know because after a month of wondering what was wrong with me I went to my doctor. I had to give him a fecal sample and wait for the lab results before he prescribed medication.

This was when I was in my late 30s. I didn't start filtering water until I was 20; before that I'd drink straight from whatever stream or lake was handy. I'd built an immunity to Giardia when I was a little kid. I still had some immunity left when I accidentally some creek water and got mild symptoms, hence it took a month for me to finally go the doctor.

No. Nor would I trust the others you mentioned alone. I also wouldn't drink from a source like that unless I was literally dying. A bandana, sawyer, and water treatment tablets are all you need for pretty much any scenario that %99.9 of you are going to run into while /out/. Anything else is larp.

I assumed we were talking about countries in which cholera, dysentry, E. coli, and norovirus -- diseases which can subside within a week in healthy individuals -- aren't the most common water borne diseases, although norovirus is common enough on the AT and PCT to take precaution, and E. coli is becoming much more common in the US with the influx of millions of wetbacks.

Water borne diseases in nigger-tier countries are another topic altogether, and we'd be foolish to rely solely on microfiltration in those regions.

Fact is you have your own built in sterilization process.

Put your creek water in a container, leave some head space. Fart into the container and seal it up. Shake vigorously and wait like 15 mins. Fully sterilized water even cryptosporidium.

HABs? Neutralizes them. Other poison shit? Fine.

Fact is you don't need filter those are dumb. You don't need bleach drops or tablets or whatever. Fart and shake. It's the bubbler method you just use gas purification.
